Warning: steer clear of Refurbdepot.com and their warranty co., CPS

I know a lot of college guys and tech and electronic gizmo guys come around here, so let me warn you about my experience with refurbdepot.com and they accompanying warranty company they use, Consumer Priority Service.

I bought what I thought was a pretty good deal at the time on a refurbed 360 Premium (last Sept.); HDMI cord, wireless controller, wireless headset and a 4 year warranty for $340 shipped. I knew the 360 history all too well, so the 4 year warranty was a no-brainer. Refurbdepot uses CPS as a warranty service for all of their products it seems. Since everything was spelled out pretty well and their e-mail notifications were on point, I felt pretty good about the purchase.

Well, as history dictates, the 360 RROD'd in July, so I went into the procedures with CPS on how to handle this. This is when the nightmare happened. CPS required a $50 deposit check, instead of the $35 that they normally charge, because I "failed to register the warranty" upon purchase. Huh? I have to register a warranty that I already paid for?? Ok, fine, they had me by the short hairs. I then had to box up EVERYTHING and send it so they could see if the problem could be duplicated at their shop. I did not backup info from our HD, figuring I'm getting this back one way or another.

    Wrong.

I get a call that the unit is "not salvageable". I was told that I did not have the option to have it returned to me as it was already being sent for scrap. My only other recourse was to get another refurbed machine, which would only have a 30 day warranty or $150 cash + the $35 depost I made (ya, I had to sac. the $15 for not "registering" the warranty...BS). So, the 4 year warranty went up in smoke as they indicated that they fulfilled their obligation by replacing the unit one way or another. This was not spelled out anywhere on the Refurbdepot site nor the CPS site. Totally bogus. So I figured I do not want to be in their pocket any longer. I took the cash and split. Funny thing is they wanted a copy of my driver's license along with the signed agreement form. Unbelievable. Fortunately I was able to pretty much come out even as I've since bought a used (only 1 year) Halo edition system and flipped the Rock Band that came with it, netting only a $150 price tag.
When I finally got through to a "manager" at Refurbdepot, I sort of got a "dem's da breaks" response.

    But the point being........

Steer clear of Refurbdepot.com and any company that used CPS to warranty their product.

    ~~end of rant (and warning)~~

    p.s. Spread the word.

That does suck. Especially the part about only giving you $150. As far as them having fulfilled their obligations by filling the warranty once, that's not the first time I've seen it.

Best Buy's Product Replacement plans are like that. You can get your item replaced once and if you want your replacement to be covered you have to buy another PRP.

Heck, from what I've seen I think Best Buy only offers Product Service Plans(the kind where you send your machine for repair) on game systems in Canada now.

I'm a little confused though, couldn't you have just sent the RROD Xbox 360 to Microsoft, where it was still covered? I thought MS is covering all 360's for a while, at least ones with RROD.
