    Rear projection TV talk...

Well I own a Sony 50" LCD Rear projection SXRD WEGA Full 1080p TV KDS-50A2000 and I know there are a few on here he have the same set.

I just want to ask a few questions in general, are you guys still happy with your Rear projection TV? I bought mine in 07 of January, so I will have owned my set for almost two years now, I do love my TV still, but it just seems like every new TV made now is Plasma or LCD. I know Sony doesn't even make RP Sets anymore.

I bought My set from Circuit City and I bought there 2 year warranty which runs out in January, so I really wanted to know is there a place I can buy an extended warranty when the CC ones expires? CC is asking way to much for a one year warranty, there asking $269, I paid $259 when I bought the TV, anyway, if someone knows a site or place that I could by an extend warranty to still cover my set, please let me know.

    Thanks

Yup, I still have the Samsung DLP 50" that I bought a few weeks before you bought yours. I still love the TV and the PQ is fantastic. Only one minor problem that I only notice is the damn silk screen effect on white or light colors, it drives me up a wall. But I have to stick it out till this thing croaks. I bought the 4 year warranty with mine because it was I think $300-$350. I would like an LCD down the road to replace this one, but I am happy with the TV.

I had a 65" RP CRT for about 4 years. I really liked the picture on it, but I ditched it this past winter for a plasma. The viewing angle on RPs just bother me too much. It was great and I loved the picture, but you really could only sit in two spots in my living room and watch the TV. Also, that model TV I had was only HD Ready and I wanted one with a HD tuner in it.

I've had the 60" Sony SXRD for over two years now and I'm still lovin it...I'll put its PQ over any newer TV.

I can tell I'm going to need a new lamp within a year or two, because the brightness of the PQ has has dwindled slighty, but other than that the thing is money.

I'm still very happy with the 42" Samsung 720p DLP HDTV I bought in March of 07. I paid far less than I would have for a similarly sized LCD or plasma and to my eyes the picture is very good.

Naturally, there are far better sets available for less today, but I've had the enjoyment of the TV for the past 18 months.

Personally, I like the look of most rear projection TVs. The image and the colours seems more natural, especially against most LCDs.

SSE is my only complaint too. As a hockey fan, it can be a little distracting, but it doesn't bother me too much.

The horizontal viewing angles on my DLP are pretty good (vertical is another story). But my TV is my primary sports/gaming TV and 90% of the time I'm the only one who watches it. My selfish reasoning when I bought it was that I'm always going to be watching it from the sweet spot, so I didn't really care if the occasional guest had an issue with viewing angles!

                  Re: Rear projection TV talk...

bought my sammy 46" DLP 2 years ago. Love the thing. Still think it has some of the better HD quality picture around- the standard Def channels dont look that great in 480 though( which I keep my SD channels at to fill the screen.)

I have one scuff mark on the screen after my vac fell, and the handle smacked against it. They wanted $600 to replace the screen (parts and labor), could probably buy a new set for that much.

So, I just turtle waxed it, and the son of a bitch actually came out.
There is also a 1 inch dark line in the right hand picture that came out of nowhere. Anyone know what the hell that could be?? I think it popped up after the vac hit the screen, but this mark is nowhere near the impact point.

Anyways, I am happy with this until it dies. I will get a plasma next.

Oh yeah- another thing I hate is how you have to change the lamp every 5k hours. That thing went out on me at the worst time- $150 for a new one.

SSE is my biggest complaint with the TV, otherwise I like it.

The newer DLP's have much better viewing angles and are just better built than the ones that we have with lamps and color wheels. The newer ones with the LED are supposed to be top notch.

I wish I knew how many hours I have used up so far on the lamp.

If you press mute-1-8-2 and then power, you can enter the service menu. There's an option in there that will tell you exactly how many hours are on your lamp. But before you do that, two tips: 1) write down your picture settings, because they'll reset to the default and 2) don't make any changes to any settings in the service menu unless you REALLY know what you're doing — you could really mess up your set.

Yeah if you get multiple years it's less per year.

However with the SXRD it's like roulette. You've been lucky so far. I've already had everything replaced that could ever get replaced so it's good now.

Plus the TV tech told us that even if you don't have a warranty they will replace one bulb per year.
