    Installing memory question

For anyone who's installed memory before:

I'm going to install some additional memory into our laptop this weekend. Compaq's instructions strongly suggest wearing a grounded wrist strap to avoid ruining the memory with static electricity. Is this really necessary or are they being overly cautious? Do I really need to go buy something I'm only going to use once? Thanks.

I've never once used something like that. Just don't go dragging your feet on the carpet with socks on before you mess with the memory. You might want to tap something metal with your finger first before you grab the memory if you want to be safe and make sure you discharge any static electricity in you. I think they just say that to cover themselves in case it does happen.

      Re: Installing memory question

Only advice I can offer, be VERY gentle when seating the memory in the laptop. I was seating my memory when upgrading from 1GB to 2GB and the arms for it snapped off and I was then forced to put a 1GB stick in, return the other and end up with the same amount of ram I had before except it cost me 45.00 out of pocket, talk about a waste of money.

If you have any concerns, just don't install it while on carpet and touch something metal. That will keep anything from happening unless you somehow retain static electricity in your body.
