Saw the concert last night. Amazing! William Duvall does Layne justice (though he can never replace him of course). Here's the set list:

    Rain When I Die
    Again
    Check My Brain
    Them Bones
    Damn That River
    A Looking in View
    We Die Young
    Nutshell
    Love Hate Love
    Sludge Factory
    Acid Bubble
    Angry Chair
    Man in the Box
    Would?
    (encore)
    Dirt
    No Excuses
    Rooster

My friends told me they rock post Layne which I was surprised. Though I have listened to some of the new material. I like.

Of the two new songs released, A Looking in View is good, but I can't stand Check My Brain at all, I hated it more and more every time I heard it until I finally deleted it.

I just listened to the entire album on youtube. I dont think there is any GREAT songs on the album but there is a few good songs. I think private hell, your decision, and a looking in view are the best songs.

I listened to it as well, and while I haven't given it enough listens to pass judgement, what I heard was really meh to bad.

I really wasnt expecting all that much anyway though. It's without a doubt the worst AIC album imo.

I think it's pretty harsh to judge an album based on sounds clips that are less than a minute long.

Sorry, thought you were talking about the YouTube clip that had clips from each song on the album.

To each his own, I guess...

I'm not saying its a bad album or anything, its just not that great compared to previous AIC records imo. It sounds a little too much like Jerry's solo stuff which I'm not a big fan of. Overall I like about four songs off the album, but it just isn't like previous AIC albums where I liked just about every song. I admit though, I'm a lot older now than I was since AIC released anything new, so it just may be that my taste in music is changing.

There is a song or two on here that I don't care for, but overall this is a good album. Not too sure what a lot of people were expecting, Staley is gone (RIP), so their music is not going to be exactly the same.

I think the sound of the album has more to with the gap in time between the last and the current than the absence of Staley (especially when one considers Staley did not compose any material on the last album, just contributed lyrics). Fourteen years is a long time and no one is the same musician they were then as they are now. New ideas have come and gone and different influences show. At the same time though, this is still an Alice album and a great one at that.

I think most people will be surprised that Cantrell assumes most of the lead vocal duties and Staley's "replacement" only really sings lead on one song (Last of My Kind, which is a very good song, by the way). The album is mostly slow to mid tempo songs with thick guitars and lots of off-time pieces. To me, this sounds like a natural progression from the self-titled album released 14 years ago. There's maybe one or two songs that do not flow as well as some others (Take Her Out being the first that comes to mind) but there are some excellent tracks as well. Private Hell is an unmistakable AiC song and an instant classic while Acid Bubble is one of the group's finest moments. I'm also quite fond of the opener, All Secrets Known and one of the singles A Looking In View, which eased any concerns I may have had that this would not live up to the band's back catalog. The poignant closer, Black Gives Way to Blue is a nice way to end the record and a fitting tribute to Staley.

Ultimately, this is Alice in Chains in 2009 and this album proves the band has a lot left to give. Yes Layne is gone, but the trademark harmonized vocals are still present and the band's creative leader, Jerry Cantrell, is in fine form. Here's hoping for a US tour this Fall/Winter. Also of note, I picked up this CD for 9 bucks, can't beat that price for a new disc.

Very well done on the impressions...........I love this album and really like the new direction for the band. All Secrets Known is a song that has grown on me and the guitar/bass work towards the end of the song to me feels Sabbathesque from their later years. Private Hell is also good. I really like Check My Brain, so much going on in that song its freakin' great.

Duvall is great as Layne's replacement and you should check out some of his previous work, some good stuff. The guy has a hell of a voice on him.
