    Home theatre question

I have a nice Sony home theatre system. I notice that when I play DVDs through the system all six speakers have sounds that come out of the, but when I use my PS3 and play BluRays, just four.

Do I have to change a setting in the PS3?

    thanks.

Can you let us know what kind of audio cables (for example, optical, coaxial) you are using to connect to the receiver for both the DVD player and the PS3?

probably have to change something in the ps3 menu.....

are you using a digital optical cable from the ps3 to the receiver?
or hdmi from the ps3 to the receiver?
or going from the ps3 straight to the tv ?

If you're using HDMI, then you need to set the PS3 audio settings to LPCM. That will give you up to 7.1 surround sound.

Okay…I have HDMI going from the back of my PS3 into my LCD t.v.

There is an optical cable going from the back of my t.v. to the back of the Home Ent. System IN. (When I play a DVD on the Home Entertainment Sys. I get sound in all speakers)

(I experimented and went to AUDIO SETTINGS on my PS3 and changed it from HDMI to OPTICAL and then I go no sound at all)

My audio output automatically shows Linear PCM.

There are two places I can go to adjust the audio.

One is the VIDEO OUTPUT SETTINGS where I adjust my video and then I can SET AUDIO OUTPUT SETTINGS.

Currently my audio output here is HDMI and if I were to do it manually I see that LINEAR PCM 2 CH. 44.1 KHZ, 48KHZ are the only boxes checked out of the ten shown.

If I go to SOUND SETTINGS/AUDIO OUTPUT SETTINGS it shows HDMI and the very same setting as above.

If I check all the boxes I get no sound at all.

The problem is that you have the PS3 HDMI going into your TV. If you want surround sound you need to have an HDMI in on your receiver OR use a optical cable from the PS3 directly to your receiver for audio.

Whenever you use your Ps3 just unplug the optical cable from the back of the TV and put it into the Optical port on your ps3

                  Okay guys, thanks a lot.

So, I guess there's no way to have the PS3 AND the Home Entertainment System DVD player hooked up independently and get the surround sound for both without having to disconnect something? I have to take the optical cable out of the back of the t.v. (which now goes to the entertainment system) and, in it's place, run it from the PS3 to the entertainment system when I want to play my BluRays on the PS3....

I'll try that out later, sounds like it should work. Again, thanks for your patience.

just try running another optical cable from the ps3 to the receiver, leave the one from the tv to the receiver hooked up. Don't you have Direct TV? Seems like you should just run an optical cable from your satellite box to the receiver.

No, dumped Direct tv for Warner Cable. They have a bunch of Spanish language stations (for my bi-lingual wife) and also can't get local stations of Direct tv.

The back of my Home Ent. system only has one optical input.

I don't really need to use the DVD player in the Home Ent. Sys., I'll just use the PS3 for all the movies.

My suggestion is you buy a second HDMI cable so you can run one from the PS3 to the receiver and another from the receiver to the TV. That way you'll get multichannel audio instead of just from two channels.

Does your receiver support Neo 6 sound? If so, that's the best option for your optical situation. Otherwise get that second HDMI cable and let your PS3 do automatic audio settings with HDMI and see what kind of results you come up with.

Get rid of the TV to Receiver IN, it should be Source to Receiver, no sound should be going to the TV.
