    DirecTV/Home theater questions...

So I've been looking into buy a HTIB for my new place, and I think I've found one that will work well.

Its in my price range, has two HDMI inputs and two optical audio inputs. The only downside I see is that you can't run the surround sound through the HDMI, so you have to use the optical input. I plan on running a directTV HD DVR and a 360 through the receiver.

Here is my question. Will I be able to run the HDMI out from the Direct TV and still use the optical audio for surround sound at the same time? If both can't run at the same time, it would be worthless because my receiver wouldn't be able to process it. It seems like something that shouldn't be a problem, I just want to make sure.

Yep, you can...the ports are active even if you are using HDMI. I run my HDMI straight to my TV and run optical cables to my receiver since it doesn't have any HDMI inputs or outputs. If you run the HDMI to the receiver, you should be able to assign what audio would correspond to the video...I would look up the owner's manual of the Yamaha and make sure it is possible if you wanted to do it that way. Otherwise, I would run video straight to the TV and audio to the receiver.

I do the same thing. I have the DVR HDMI going straight to TV and Optical going to Receiver, then 360 both going to Receiver. Then you just set it up on your remote to go to the correct video and audio source for what you want to do.
