    Quick Tech Question re. Computers..

Is it passable to get a laptop with 3 or 4GB of memory if there's no dedicated graphics card? Will the graphics card help with watching Blu-Ray movies? What about for games (mainly things like MVP 08, etc)? It seems like if I got a 256mb dedicated video card in my laptop, that's not much out of the 3/4GB if I were to just have it integrated.

Can someone spell this out for me? I keep holding out on insane Dell laptop deals because some (most) of the models do not have a dedicated graphics card.

EDIT: And what does an HDTV Tuner actually do? It'll allow me to pick up local channels in HD through my laptop or something? Just the locals?

Pretty simple answer here, if you play games then you need a dedicated graphics card, if you don't then it's not needed and 3 or 4 gigs of ram will be just fine.

An HDTV tuner will allow you to pick up HD channels on your laptop, presuming that there are towers broadcasting locally. If you live in a major city you probably will find some HD channels, if you don't then you probably won't.

Thanks for the answers, man. So even if I get a Blu-Ray player on it, it's not really necessary to get a dedicated graphics card? Would it help in any way?

What about if it's not an HDTV tuner and just a regular one? I'll pick up regular feeds over the air? Is it possible to get more than just the locals through a subscription of some sort or to pair up my DTV service with it?

you know i completely missed the part about the blu-ray, if you are getting blu-ray on your laptop i would heartily recommend you get a dedicated graphics card regardless of the computer's memory...i just bought a dell laptop that i'm typing on now back in may and to get an XPS with a geforce 8600 wasn't too awful expensive.

you don't want to get just a regular TV tuner, if you get a tuner get an HDTV one. a regular TV tuner unless connected to a cable connection will pick up snowy channels and it'd be pretty miserable whereas an HDTV tuner is digital, meaning you'll either get nothing or you'll get pristine an HD quality picture. again though, if you're going to connect your laptop to a cable either is ok but if you want to use the laptop like on the go and pick up over the air channels you should go with an HDTV tuner.
