    Re: OS Blues Thread

Heh, not what I would call "old school blues", but some good stuff posted there.

    T-Bone Walker "Stormy Monday":
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wemG2821l-o&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wemG2821l-o&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan doing "Stormy Monday" (for comparison/awesomeness):
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hXBdJkTDgbw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hXBdJkTDgbw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

    Albert King "Blues Power":
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/h5dpp2iCRwM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/h5dpp2iCRwM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Luther Allison "Cherry Red Wine" (nobody knows this cat and it's CRIMINAL -- he's so so good):
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hsygj4hqoOo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hsygj4hqoOo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Freddie King "Boogie Funk" -- he's probably my favorite actual guitarist of the older guys.. phenomenal:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8kdwuI7V6Pw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8kdwuI7V6Pw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Hell of a singer too -- here he is doing Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine":
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/moxAvsN2HH0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/moxAvsN2HH0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

In that Freddie King 'Texas Suffle' vein, here's SRV absolutely shredding Freddie's classic "Hideaway" and moving into his evolved Texas Shuffle with "Rude Mood" -- beastly:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/w-BEphVRgts&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/w-BEphVRgts&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Here's Albert Collins, the other main 'Texas Shuffle' type of guitarist doing "Frosty" -- might be the most technically-impressive of the older greats:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VqqgqrbFdwM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VqqgqrbFdwM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Here's some BEAUTIFUL acoustic stuff from Mississippi John Hurt, who is still one of the most impressive acoustic guitarists I've ever heard -- "Make Me a Pallet Me On Your Floor":
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/39RBm4tH9cA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/39RBm4tH9cA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Another one because he's so damn awesome... he starts playing at 1:49 or so:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BvRxA8gR7bw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BvRxA8gR7bw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

      Re: OS Blues Thread

      Some for the ladies...

Koko Taylor feat. Little Walter "Wang Dang Doodle":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fkyklIiHdlQ&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fkyklIiHdlQ&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Etta James (nobody else has a voice like her... ever... just like Nina Simone) doing "Something's Got A Hold On Me":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AfuF0c6Ht4Q&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AfuF0c6Ht4Q&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Speaking of, here's nina doing "Blues for Mama":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2AbJbMlT1jU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2AbJbMlT1jU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Hound Dog Taylor & Little Walter "Wild About You Baby":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gtnJM8iUy38&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gtnJM8iUy38&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This right here is some BLUES... Elmore James doing "It Hurts Me Too":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nBA2REoRD98&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nBA2REoRD98&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

You've heard this song played by Led Zeppelin and others, but here's Skip James (who has the most distinctive voice of male blues isngers IMO... haunting) doing "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rv-_mzVBSF8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rv-_mzVBSF8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Another distinctive voice/delivery belongs to Howlin' Wolf (hence the name) -- here he is doing "Smokestack Lightning":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_LNt5J0Cesc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_LNt5J0Cesc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Another overlooked great, Magic Sam doing "Magic Sam Boogie" -- the finger picking o nthis video is nice.. great song:
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hc3_K_Do624&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hc3_K_Do624&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Lightnin' Hopkins "Baby Please Don't Go":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/d49m6G9vOrI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/d49m6G9vOrI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

You Zeppelin fans might recognize this one by Leadbelly... another one of Jimmy Page's direct rips from a classic artist. Let's not start that argument, but yeah "Gallis Pole" aka "Gallows Pole":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MmTNgJxlrCY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MmTNgJxlrCY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Rarely do you see Buddy Guy playing anything but his patented polka-dotted Stratocaster, but here he is doing a version of "Hoochie Coochie Man" in 1969:
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/C-w-dn6oDi4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/C-w-dn6oDi4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Jimmy Rogers with a bunch of greats (Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon) doing "Sloppy Drunk":
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t6Y1VNuVd94&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t6Y1VNuVd94&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Otis Rush "I Can't Quit You Baby" -- great singer:
      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uy2tEP3I3DM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uy2tEP3I3DM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Hah, okay, that's it from me for now... I have got work that I should be doing instead of watching all these sweet YouTubes.

          Re: OS Blues Thread

Yeah, I learned how to play guitar thanks to SRV tab books and he's probably still my #1 in terms of "holy ****, that guy can PLAY" while still having a ton of soul (unlike "guitar gods" Steve Vai, Satriani, EVH, etc.). He and Hendrix... But yeah, find some of those early performances -- Live at Montreaux is where that performance came from, and it's available in DVD as well as CD form I believe. Another DVD package I recommend if you're a big SRV fan is the Austin City Limits DVD, as it has his early stuff (from 83 I think) and a later performance when he's clean and sober -- both are very good. SRV Live at the El Mocambo is a nice early one too.

If you haven't heard the In the Beginning" album by SRV, it's a GREAT early recording that shows you his evolution as well as the kind of singer/guitarist that he's always been -- my favorite cuts on that are "Guitar Hurricane", "Tin Pan Alley", and "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)". That version of "Tin Pan Alley" gives me chills every time.

Speaking of, here's Otis Rush doing "All Your Love":
          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WRnyI7loZwY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WRnyI7loZwY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Heh, I feel ya, John! John Lee Hooker doing "Big Legs, Tight Skirt":
          <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tuFbePO72gE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tuFbePO72gE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Awesome thread. YouTube is blocked here at work, but some album recommendations based on stuff I've been listening to lately:

            "Dirt Floor" by Chris Whitley
"Tap the Red Cane Whirlwind" by Kelly Joe Phelps
            "Shepherds Bush" by Joe Bonamassa
"Live at Sugar Hill" by John Lee Hooker
            "First Recordings" by R.L. Burnside
"Big Mama Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band"
            Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

I don't know how old you are, but did you ever get to see SRV when he was playing Antone's all the time? I was 5 going on 6 when he died, so I obviously didn't have the opportunity hah.. I still need to go to Austin even though I have a pre-disposition against Texas -- too much good music to skip out on.

no i didnt get a chance to see him at Antones unfortunately. I was around that age also, and I lived up in Dallas.

Ive seen Jimmie Vaughan a crapload of times though

I still need to go to Austin even though I have a pre-disposition against Texas -- too much good music to skip out on.
pre-disposition against Texas? wzup with that LOL

but Austin is a different kind of city. If you love music you'll like Austin. Music wise it's similar to pre-Katrina New Orleans, although on a smaller scale, and it has a very very wide variety in styles of music.

What I love about it is that you can find any number of different styles on ANY night of the week at clubs and dives like Antones, Stubbs, Continental club, Saxons, etc.etc.etc...and there is DEFINITELY a lot of good blues music all over the place. Although, it's not as good as it used to be. A lot of clubs are having a harder time staying in business these days.

Dan Auerbach's debut solo album is a great modern (country) blues album - my favorite album of 2009 so far. This track is my favorite.
