Laptop always shuts off

I can't figure out why my laptop just randomly shuts off. It's become very problematic because I am in the middle of essay season.

I've looked at the power settings and I even changed it to "home computer" to ensure it never shuts off, but it still does.

If I unplug the power cord, it still works so it can't be the battery, but I cant figure out how to solve this.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks

Overheating possibly? Fan may be the culprit.

    Indications of laptop overheating problem:
    •
The keyboard and the bottom of your laptop are very hot when the laptop is working.
The CPU fans are working all the time at maximum rotation speed and operate much louder than before.
The laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning. When it just started, the laptop was shutting down after 1-2 hours and how it shuts down after 5-10 minutes of operation.
    • The laptop works fine when it runs idle, but shuts down as soon as you start using any memory demanding applications (DVD player, image editing software, video editing software, etc.).

I notice it does seem hotter than normal and it makes noise a lot more than before. However, the rest does not apply.

Could that still be the issue? Is so, anything I can do?

Try getting a fan to put underneath it. I know they sell them at Best Buy..

One of the first things to check are the fans... Look around the vents of the laptop and see if there's any dust blocking the airflow. Also, I'd check the laptop's user guide and try to crack it open (either via screws underneath the laptop, or actual removal the keyboard) and expose the guts of the system to see if there's any buildup of dust.

If your fan is spiking in voltage (check through BIOS) then its time to get a new fan. If its stable, its time to clean the inside

                Guys, thanks for the responses.

This is an Acer Aspire 5000. At the moment, I am still in Australia (have been since January) and wont have access to my manual until late November, when I head home.

Ive had this laptop for 3 years now, maybe 2.5, and am not really attached to it. I am converting to Apple when I get home -- the reason I even brought this over to Aus is because I want the iMac, not MBP, and it was 2 lbs too heavy for the plane.

Either way, this thing just has to last me until November 28, and then I'll be good.

So how do I check the BIOS. I have no idea what that is. lol

Toshiba's are notorious for having power failure issues...You can check the BIOS when the laptop first starts up...

During bootup you'l have to press a certain F-key or another key. I'll look up the manual later today/tonight to see (google is your best friend). Typically its F2, F98, F9 or Delete.
