    Bill Maher's "Religulous"

Try to keep this on topic of the movie.

Anyone going to check this out? Looks pretty good to me. Plus I am a Maher fan.

        Re: Bill Maher's "Religulous"

Looks like this might be left open to see if people can actually talk sensibly about the movie....

So, I'll try. Even though I obviously haven't seen it, I do watch Real Time every Friday. I'm not necessarily a fan of Maher's, but I like to get different sides of stories even though he's pushed me to my limits with his loaded panels and his overall attitude toward anything he disagrees with. For the record, I watch O'Rielly every night to. Once again, I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but his show covers a ton of topics across many areas every night so I feel it gives me an idea of what's going on and I'll make up my own opinions.

Anyway, enough about myself and on to this movie. Well, I know I won't be paying to see this. I've seen enough of Maher's opinions on religion that I know exactly where this movie is going to go. He is so against any religion that he will only degrade anyone who has any faith whatsoever. And that's what this movie will be about. He'll pick subjects to talk to who are only going to support his agenda. People that he can either make fun of or who agree 100% with him. Which brings the whole use of the term "documentary" into question.

Wouldn't the term "propaganda" be better? A documentary is supposed to be nothing but the facts, but this is going to be oozing with opinion and slant. He's not going to be doing a fact finding mission on Judiasm or Islam or the Mormans or Baptists or the Amish. He'll lump everyone together and make fun of them.

Anyway, if you are at all of faith, then you're probably going to be offended with this "documentary" so it's probably not a good idea to see it. And if you agree with him, then you're basically wasting 9 dollars just to agree with him when you can watch Real Time and get the same thing.

But, that's my opinion and you can take it for what it's worth.

Yeah... I hope most would see this as a mockumentary and not as a factual accout of... well... anything.

One of the guys interviewed in the movie lives next to the Pope in the Vatican so it isn't all fringe characters.

I finally saw the trailer for this. First of all, why do has-been, hack comedians who only enter the field to have a platform for their personal issues and agendas get granted such? I truly have grown tired of his smug, smarmy, self-aggrandizing approach to most topics, which he presents only to attempt showing how "wonderfully" clever and sarcastic, not to mention denigrading he can truly be.

Damn the debates...... stick him in a room with Dennis Miller and watch Maher come out cowering and limping.

                That was worth saying twice.

                  Re: Bill Maher's "Religulous"

Although I love Maher, I DVR all his shows/podcast. I disagree with his views of religion. From what I have read, and seen about this movie it looks to fall in the category of "mockumentary". Promoting this movie on NPR's Fresh Air he contradicted himself a couple times. "The Onion" gave it a D+ and said Maher is funnier and smarter than what he presents in this movie. An example is of those that he interviews in the movie tend to be on the "extreme" side of faith...a man who dresses as Jesus at a Christian Theme Park, patrons of a truck stop for christians are a couple of examples. I probably won't watch this in a theatre as I don't think the "big screen" will add anything, but I will probably rent on DVD.

                        Re: Bill Maher's "Religulous"

I've watched Bill Maher a few times and I agree with him politically, most of the time. I can't stand his religious views, though. It's very condescending and one-sided. A few Fridays ago he got into a religious debate with some British dude on his show, and the British guy completely put him in his place regarding his attitude and approach toward religion.

If you're against religion, fine, it's your call. But when you go to these lengths to give a one-sided, completely biased film using religious extremists as your basis for all religious people... that's ignorant and offensive. It's almost hypocritical the way he tries to convert the same people he criticizes for trying to convert him.

Anyways, don't want to get too off base on this, but I'm definitely not watching Religulous.
