I also saw this movie over the weekend and thought it was excellent. You really feel for the two main characters and the beach scene is pretty amazing.

Read the book for class last year - absolutely amazing piece of literature.

Really need to try and see the movie sometime soon.

I had to read the book in high school and absolutely hated it.

Are we talking about the movie with Keira Knightley? Because I saw it in the theaters with my girlfriend and we both thought it was horrible.

Then again I was very pissed with the ending, so that did not help.

Yeah, the ending was really sad. But, I thought Keira Knightley and James McAvoy were incredible. I can't stop thinking about this movie.

The cinematography was top notch, nice story Knightly is one of the few skinny chicks I dig.

                    Re: Atonement?

I have had about 6 months to sit on this after watching it.

I've gone from liking it a lot after viewing it to now feeling it was basically a better than decent movie.

It had good characters and I thought the performances were well done. Cinematography was also exceptional. But, the entire storyline seemed kind of ho-hum. It wanted to center on this lie, but it really didn't. Instead, it was mostly about him finding the woman he loved. Problem is, the movie never realized that until the end. It was scene after scene of this man that was wronged and I never saw on screen what the film was trying to push me to feel.

Only at the end, you get to see the movie finally take a step back and say, "Oh, yea, this is the story." Maybe the device used explains the confusing plot that had the wrong theme, but even that story device needs to have a better foundation. I hate to believe that someone could be a great writer if their last novel was that horribly written. I'm sure if the movie went on for another year, you'll see fans complaining about the writer losing their touch at the end of their career/life.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer
