The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
Saw both last night on A&E. I am a sucker for the original. What do you think?22Part I0%15Part II0%7"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Tags: None -
Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
Don't know if you saw my post in the OS Off Topic thread but...
I'm all GODFATHER'ed out.
I spent the majority of my day watching the first two GODFATHER movies. I had tried watching them before when I was younger but felt it was boring but now that i'm more of a movie maven these days I sat and watched them. The first movie is a masterpiece and deserves all the praise it gets. The second film while also great just had too much "fat" in it. The acting was great though especially from the famous Lee Strasberg as Hyman Roth. I liked the young Vito Corleone storyline a bit more then the Michael storyline.
I'll watch part III sometime next week.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Man this is so tough. I myself love movies and have so much respect for both as they are both true masterpieces. With that being said I voted for the first one for no other reason besides it was the original. Not to take anything away from the second one of course because there are so many great things about II, especially deniro.Go Yankees

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
I've seen both on many occasions, so I can't really choose one as being better than the other.
Part II has the brilliant back story, with De Niro as Young Vito, and Part I has Moe Greene getting it in the eye, along with "Carlo being shown the tree."Comment

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
I have no opinion on which film I like better. Both movies are easily in my Top Ten, perhaps even my Top Five of all time. As you probably know both won the Oscar for Best Picture, among numerous other awards and #2 is considered the greatest sequel of all time. I don't know of the fat SPTO speaks of in GF2, because there were no slow parts for me. The prequel & current storyline of GF2 drew a great contrast between the original godfather (Brando/Deniro) and his son/successor (Pacino). Two of the greatest films ever made.
I ABSTAIN!!!!
PS-I have seen both movies several, several times.

Watching either of these films is like watching a sonata by Mozart or a painting by Monet on film...........just pure magic.Twitch - bluengold34_osComment

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
The back story is what puts it ahead of the first for me. Although, it is the thinnest of margins. Both movies are epic and pure genious on film.

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
I thought the first one was a masterpiece and voted for that one. The second one felt forced in someways due to the story of the first movie because too many loose ends were trying to be filled. It did not feel natural in relation to the first movie. However the part that I did not like about the second movie was the ending judgement day scenes where Micheal cleans house (eliminating the enemies, similar to the first). Again it seemed forced as if trying to recapture the feel of the first when it was not neccesary.
I would have liked to see the full recreation of Vito Corleone's rise rather than Michael's ordeal. If anything Michael's story would have been a great Godfather III than the abomination they released as the third film.Comment

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
Both are great movies, two of my all time favorites. The 3rd one is a good movie if it's not compared with I & II.I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
If you watch it when it's on Bravo TV, They combine the two movies and show the scenes from when they happen, so it's chronological order from Part I and II. So it starts with Young Vito and ends with Michael at the end of Part II. Every time that is on, I watch it, because when you see how they created that entire story...just wow.
As for this question, I think the first one is a better story, but the second one was more entertaining...if that makes any sense whatsoever.Too Old To Game Club

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
If I had to put them in order:
II > I > III
Part III was just terrible IMO.

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
I don't think III was bad, it just had ridiculously high standards to live up to. If I had to choose between one and two, man it's hard but I'd go with II. The contrast between father and son, the conflict between the brothers....it was just a great movie and beautifully told. If I had to choose I'd take two by a very very slim margin.PS: You guys are great.

Re: The Godfather: Part I or Part II?
So many great scenes in both. Many of the actors died relatively young or close to the time of the movie including.
BARZONI-(Richard Conti, died 1975, age 65)
SOLOZZO (Al Lieterri, died 1975, age 47)
FREDO (John Cazale, died 1978, age 42)Comment
