PS3: Widescreen DVD is stretched on 4:3 HDCRTV

I have an HD CRT TV with 4:3 ratio.
When I owned an Xbox 360, if I played a widescreen DVD it looked perfect if I set it for 480p Normal Screen.

I now have a PS3 and all the widescreen DVD's look stretched. The only way to fix this, it seems, is to change the ratio on my TV from Normal to 16:9.

That sounds easy enough but it annoys me that I have to do that every time. Especially when you get a call from the wife at work because she has no idea how to do that.

I've looked in the PS3 settings and I can't find anything that changes the ratio from 1080i to 480p for this issue. I've changed the DVD Wide setting that can be set too "Letterbox" to "Pan in Scan" and I've also changed 'DVD Upscaler' to "Normal" from "Fullscreen". None of this works.

Am I missing something? Or will I always have to change my TV settings to 16:9 to watch a freakin' regular DVD?

I think your TV should be set to that anyway, wouldn't you?

I suggest you watch them on your PS3 either way, because at least you're upscaling (assuming you're using HDMI... actually, that's a terrible assumption on my part). But basically, when the PS3 is set to 1080i, it's expecting widescreen format. There is a way to change it if you go to XMB -> Settings -> Display Settings -> Choose source -> Uncheck 1080i -> Accept. It's something like that, see if it works.

I understand the hassle, considering I always have to switch off Game Mode when watching movies and lower the subwoofer level. I also like to turn off my PS3 controller, so if I'm watching a movie with people and when it starts, people are always like, "Whoa, what hap... oh." Just kind of annoying that I have to do so many things and I have to excuse them for it.

    Hope that helps.

yeah- your tv should be set to 16:9 format. Then you change your accessories as needed (ie cable box, etc

The problem with setting it to 16:9 is that it screws up the picture when I'm watching satellite TV in standard 4:3 ratio.

And unfortunately, I don't have HDMI connections for it - only component.

Thanks for the advice though guys.

Strange that your TV doesn't have separate settings for separate sources. Hell, my TV has separate settings for digital cable vs analog cable.

It does, but the problem with my old TV is that it only has one Component input. So I have to use a switch box for my satellite and PS3. So essentially they're using the same input.

Does your TV have HDMI? That way you can upscale your DVDs on PS3.

                Unfortunately no.

I should be getting a nice Plasma by the New Year or so, and that will clear up most of these problems.

Ted over at BMO told me about going into Settings>Dispay and changing the format from 1080i to 480p. I think that's the route I'm going to go for now. I'll change it back when I'm playing games or BluRay discs.

                Thanks again for the advice!
