I would probably suggest Adobe Premier Pro.

Avid-Around 80% of films are cut on Avid, for now.
      Premier Pro
      Vegas
      Edius

Those are the top PC editing systems. Although I'm sure Avid would be overdoing it for you.

I would suggest Premier Pro just becasue it plays nice with other Adobe Products i.e. Photoshop, After Effects, Enocre.

I've never sued Vegas or Edius but hear good things about them epseically for consumer use.

Edit: Just saw the camera you are getting. I'm not sure what format that camera exports but make sure the editing app you chose works with that camera format. They can be picky.

Also don't forget about Windows Movie Maker its free.

Avid Express DV is pretty powerful editing stuff for around 600 bucks. If you need to do alot of graphics your gonna want to get After effects for lower thirds and stuff.

Avid is pretty sick, one you know this its alot easier to make the jump to Avid Pro and Symphony.

        I love Avid

I do most of my work on Adobe Premiere Pro, but I'm going to start attempting to learn Avid because it seems to be the most popular one in the field right now.

Premiere has never given me many problems, relatively easy, simple to learn, efficient.

There's no such thing as "best"; it depends on what you want to do.

If you're just looking to cut and edit film, and add some menus and maybe some swipes and a few little effects - the Adobe Premiere Pro is overkill, not to mention extremely expensive.

I use PowerDirector7 and it works amazing. I think it was $70 - comes with a lot of features; more than any other editor in its price range comes with.

Pro is great if you're looking to do some fancy editing and really need a lot of tools; but if you're just looking to make simple movies, it's overkill.
