Agghhh......My surround sound receiver went out...WTH

This sucks....I got ready to turn my PS3 the other night, and I turned on my surround sound receiver, and all of a sudden it started flashing "PROTECT" on the display.

This is a load of crap; I use the thing maybe 8-10 hours/week, never have it to where it's really loud. Anybody else had this happen with a Sony receiver? What did you do? Is it basically a goner?

I even unplugged all the speakers and it's still doing it.....

Exactly what Sony model is it?

I'll look it up on the AVS forums and see if anybody else has had this issue or knows how to cope with it.
    Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60

I owned an STR model Sony receiver a few years ago that had the exact same problem. I did some thorough searching online (even on AVSforums as mentioned, they're pretty good source) and pretty much figured out that it was a dud. Seemed like a TON of people had the same problem. This was right when the warranty ended too!

I hope there's a solution found for your receiver. I just suggest that if you end up buying a new one, look for something other than a Sony.

I feel your pain. I had my JBL subwoofer go out. Luckily, I only paid $50 on ebay for it. Gotta get a new one this holiday season.

Actually, good point. I've been a member over there for several years...mostly lurking though. But I'll do a search. More than likely though, it's crapped out on me as other people in here have stated. :- (

I think I'm in your same boat, unfortunately.

I saw one in the black friday ads for next week at CC. Do you suppose if I pick it up this weekend, will I be able to take the black friday ad in(on black friday) and get a price adjustment? That way at least I can make sure I get it.

That's 50/50 at best. Normally they don't price adjust black friday pricing. You might get lucky and get helped by a temporary hire that either doesn't know the policy or doesn't really care.

I don't see why not. You should leave it in the box though and bring it with you. You could then actually return it and buy right back if they made you do that.

Yeah I wasnt going to open it, I would just bring the receipt up there and see what they say. CC of all people at this point would be dumb to turn down any sales....LOL

I assume you're talking about this one for $200:
                    http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ...keycode=388565

That would be a perfect fit since you already have a PS3 (handle the hidef audio). Not sure if that would be something that would fly off the shelf or that many would camp out for.

Most bargain shoppers would go for a cheap HTIB.

Hmmm....that's not bad. But I really don't need a 7.1 receiver, the way my game room is set up, all the wires hide perfectly for 5.1, would not be so for the extra speakers.

I was really looking at the Onkyo(however its spelled) for I believe $139.99....it's less power than what I had. :- ( But it's a good deal, and I'm sure it'll do the job if I just turn it up a bit higher.

Understandable. I would really consider the Sony though. You don't have to use the extra 2 speakers, but it would be a more future-proof investment. Is the Onkyo capable of handling hidef/lossless audio (either bitstreaming or LPCM)? Good luck either way.
