I don't think Goodfellas is as great as everyone else thinks it is and it's probably only Scorsese's 4th-best movie for me. But it still gets my vote over Cool Hand Luke, with apologies to Paul Newman who is awesome in CHL.

Toughest match-up for me thus far.

Goodfellas is a great movie. Love the directing by Scorsese and the entire cast was great as well.

On the other hand, Cool Hand Luke is an all-time classic.

Ugh.....choices.

I don't know if it was "much better written". I'd agree that it is directed much better.

However, you can almost say the same thing in favor of Forest Gump over Dumb and Dumber in the other thread. Farrelly doesn't have much range as a director.....every movie is pretty much in the mold of the other.

I agree.... clearly is not the right term here. Neither is the term "fact". And this has nothing to do with how many films one has directed.

You have very comparable elements in both. But Newman's performance I think shines above anyone else's in either film. Plus, I really don't like the choice for ending in GF's.

That puts CHL over GF for me....... clearly.

Paul Newman is the MAN and Cool Hand Luke is an awesome flick, but I got to give it to Goodfellas the third best Mob movie of all time.
