Nine Inch Nails coming to a close

I just got home from the Nine Inch Nails concert in Vegas tonight, and Trent made a pretty big announcement near the end of the show.

Tonight was the last show of the tour, and after they get home, Josh Freese and Alessandro Cortini are both leaving the band. Trent went on to say that after some discussion with the remaining members, and some deep thought, he is packing up and heading to Australia to record a "stripped down, back to basics" album, and then do a tour around April, but that tour would be the last tour as Nine Inch Nails. After that, he doesn't know what he is going to do, but he knows that it won't feel right to go on.

I know that NIN is basically just Trent Reznor since he writes, records, mixes, edits, and produces almost everything on his own, but he has kept the same band members for his touring band for the most part. It's a sad day for the music industry though. Whether you like them or not, you have to admit that they have been one of the biggest bands in the world for almost 20 years, and one of the most influential faces in the music industry.

I, for one, hope that this isn't the end of Trent Reznor's music career, but we'll just have to wait and see. If it is, thank you for all of the amazing memories.

    Thoughts?

I guess that's the "nail" in the coffin then....

    HA HA HA!!!!!!

Ahem...As far as mainstream music goes, I'll always associate them with the 90's because they have been too relevant this decade. Still, being mainstream does not equal success and they have been successful for a long time.

But the thing I'll never forgive them for is that they used my number one pick up line in one of their songs and now I just seem unoriginal when I use it. "I want to **** you like an animal" used to be gold!
The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!

I went to see their show this past summer. I never was a huge fan but I have to admit it was a pretty fun show. Not the best i've been to but Reznor put on a hell of a show he was really into it and it was fun to watch.

Not good news but I'm not too worried about it. I'll be shocked if Trent doesn't change his mind after the 2009 tour. If he doesn't though, I'm sure he'd still release stuff similar to Ghosts or something else under his own name.

NIN is Trent Reznor. He's had several different musicians in his touring band including Richard Patrick of Filter, Robin Finck (in G'n'R for a while), and Chris Vrenna. I'm sure he'll keep making music, not necessarily under the NIN moniker, but in some capacity.

That's what I figure, but I'm just curious on whether or not he would change the style. A friend and I were talking about NIN today, and we both prefer the earlier stuff (PHM through the Fragile), and enjoy the newer stuff, but not half as much. With his comment about going back and recording a "stripped down, back to the basics" album, maybe this is a good thing.

Then again, I held my breath on Tapeworm for the better part of a decade too, and we saw what happened there.

So the big news in a thread entitled "Re: Nine Inch Nails coming to a close" is the fact that something may or may not happen after 1 more album and supporting tour? How about a changing the thread title to "Re: Nine Inch Nails may call it quits in a year" or something?

Considering he said he will no longer be using the NIN name, I would say that is pretty much the end of NIN, with the possible beginning of a new project, if anything.

I'm sure there's still going to be NIN, because on the Lostprophets wikipedia page it said something about the drummer leaving to join them.

Correct, because as I stated, they announced that NIN's drummer is leaving after this tour.

Here's a quote from Reznor on nin.com regarding this:

The shows we have announced in 2009 and any more that may be announced will be a completely different approach with some different personnel and will likely be the last for the foreseeable future.

So, the final four NIN shows EVER are in LA next month, on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th. The opening band on the 5th is a band called io echo, and their bass player is a buddy of mine. If you can make the show, I recommend that night.

Trent has said that he isn't done making music, but is done touring, "for the foreseeable future."
