Well is one of these computers wireless? Are they both desktops? If one isn't wireless, you could buy a wireless NIC for the one upstairs.

Otherwise, you'll have to run a really, really long cord from the router all the way to the computer upstairs.

Both my computers are not wireless nor are the routers. I already have long ethernet cord and what i need. Im just not sure of one thing
-At my friends house, he had to have a router for the computer upstairs, and a ethernet cord running to the comp. downstairs, But he needed a second router to conect them both.

I know its not really a hard process but just a confusing one.

You should just be able to plug the router into the modem, and then plug in each PC using ethernet into the router....Not sure what your friend's setup was needing 2 routers, that sounds like something was wrong.

Was he actually using real routers and switches as opposed to the common household "router" which is really a combination of a switch and router? That's the only reason I could see him needing to use two.

If you have a regular household type router like a Linksys, all you have to do is plug the modem into the router, then cords from both computers to the router.
