na, he was talking about Ed Tom.

I didnt understand his comment of "removing Ed Tom from the movie and it wouldnt make a difference in the story". Take Tommy Lee Jones' character out of the movie and the story would be completely different. They certainly would have had to change the title.

you have to be in a mood to watch a pretty nuanced movie when you watch this one. It's not everyones cup of tea
Chasing is, I think, a slight exaggeration, it was more like relaxed stroll.
'Nuanced' pfft..... I got everything that was going on. It doesnt work. If the main point of this movie is Tommy Lees character coming to terms with his morality, it was the most boring, uninteresting part of the film.

the title is all that would have changed. What would have been different if he wasnt there?

T2 is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. IMDB ranks it 8th in that category and it's widely regarded as one of the best science fiction movies ever made.

But that's the problem when you compare apples and oranges like these two movies - it's tough to compare movies across different genres because their goals are so different in terms of the feelings they intend to evoke in the viewer.

For what it's supposed to be, No Country is a great movie. For what it was supposed to be, T2 was a better movie, imo.

Great villain: Okay, I suppose. At least the idea of the villain was good. The actual character had zero depth.

                    Great hero: Not so much.

IMDB's rankings are just like the polls we've done here. There's nothing really scientific about it.

Internet polls are going to be more skewed to a younger crowd, that younger crowd votes favorably for big explosions and cool special effects.

As far as depth to the actual movie.....I didn't walk out of the theater too impressed.

I do agree that this is difficult because it's apples to oranges.

I guess we'll agree to disagree on T2 because you seem to think it had all the depth of a parking lot puddle, while I think a lot of its rewatchability is due to its interesting story, character motivations, etc. The extended cut of the movie is something like 2.5 hours long and there's no way they could make a typical "bang bang shoot 'em up" movie full of explosions and nothing else with that 2.5 hours and have it be as highly regarded as T2 is.

Kind of like Star Wars - if that were a sci-fi movie all about special effects and explosions, people wouldn't even pay attention to it over 30 years later. But it was a timeless story with good enough special effects to not look overly dated today, and the same holds true for T2, imo.

Obviously a movie like No Country is going to be more character-driven, just because of the type of movie it is. But T2 definitely had more depth, creativity and storytelling prowess than you're giving it credit for.

people have different interpretations of the themes of the movie

imo, when it came to Ed Tom "chasing" Anton and Moss, you are right about him being "half ***ed" about it. It was like he didnt want to find Chigurh. Anton represented part of the "dismal tide" that had arrived, and Ed Tom didnt want anything to do with the new evolution...but he was chasing a lot more than those two, including what his father instilled in him, etc. He was running away from a lot of things also.

all three of the characters are connected. For me, it seemed that Anton was one side of a coin, and Ed Tom was the other side, while Moss was in the middle...but while they were all connected, the story focused on Ed Tom and the things he was chasing, as half arsed as the effort was, both figuratively and literally.

I love both of these movies equally. If I was making the bracket they both would be 2 seeds. That said, I went with T2. In my opinion they tell the same kind of story, and ask the same kinds of questions, but obviously using a diametrically opposed setting/backdrop. Sci-Fi will almost always win out over other genres for me though.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Both good movies, but I'm going with T2 because it is more re-watchable(word?) to me. NCFOM was good but I don't really have the desire to watch it again, while if T2 is on TV I will almost always stop and watch it.
