Recording with DVR while tv is off

Is this possible? I started a recording but I would like to shut the tv/cable box off while doing so.

You can shut the TV off, but can't shut the cablebox off assuming your DVR is part of your cablebox and not a standalone.

I dunno. I have my DVR turned off all the time and it'll record stuff. I could have something be recording right now, while I'm watching something else, and turn everything off and it'll still continue to record.

Of course "off" for the DVR still has the clock on, and the red "record" image is still lit, so it's obviously doing stuff, just not on for the TV.

Maybe my DVR's different, but it's been that way with both Comcast and Cox for me.

I have a Direct TV HDDVR. The OFF button on the remote is configured to turn both the TV & DVR off simultaneously. I don't know how it works but when the DVR is "OFF" even if I'm recording something the power light indicators will disappear, and only the tiny red record button will remain on. Don't know if it's an energy saving feature, but I suppose there's a reason for it. Obviously there is power to the unit.

Yeah, basically it's not really off, it's just not outputting video or anything. Just doing the recordings and using less energy and hardware resources.

Correct. It can be off and will turn back on to record a scheduled recording.

As for the second part, some will do that, some won't. Mine doesn't turn off if I power everything down while it's still recording. It will finish the recording, but will continue to run once the recording is finished.

For my DirecTV DVR, when I press off it turns off but continues to record or stays aware of any recordings coming up. So I'm sure it's "off" status is really a standby, but all the lights on the front of the box turn off.
