Director Darren Aronofsky thinks Wrestlers should be part of the Screen Actor's Guild

Darren Aronofsky Says Wrestlers Should Be Part of SAG
(yes a dirt sheet link, but actual legit summarized article for once)

Thoughts? I actually completely agree. Pro wrestlers in the WWE and TNA are actors and actresses at the end of the day. They play characters in scripted television programming. Really no different than what any other actor on say House or Seinfeld did. So what do you think, should pro wrestlers be considerided actors and have access to their union.

    Sure, why not.

Are they part of a union currently? I'm not sure.

No they aren't, at least in the WWE they are independent contractors. I really don't know how TNA covers their wrestlers, but I'd be shocked if it isn't the same way. So they have no union protection or benefits. One of the biggest issues in pro wrestling is the lack of group health insurance, they either need to pay for a policy themselves or have a spouse who could provide insurance. Given their medical expenses or better their potential medical expenses in the event of a severe injury, that gets costly.

This wont matter. Vince would just make the show a non-union show and refuse to sign wrestlers who were members of SAG. Wrestlers have so few other options that they would fall in line.

It makes sense but I don't see it happening.

Just a question but does anyone know if adult film actors and actresses are part of the SAG? I doubt they are.

I don't see why anyone (other than union heads) would want someone else to be in a union.

If wrestlers were part of SAG, then they would have to drop the argument that wrestling is a sport.

That argument hasn't been made since 1995 so I don't see where you're going with that.

As for wrestlers being part of SAG. I think it should happen, wrestlers don't exactly live the most ideal lives and the toll that their bodies take is out of this world. Vince McMahon has for YEARS scoffed at the idea of even helping out current or former wrestlers and only does so in order to make him look good.

There have been a few former wrestlers who've been very vocal about a union and having some ground rules to what they do. The most vocal of which is Jesse Ventura. I say give it a shot, it's better then guys living the road to ruin.

Aren't most unions formed to protect it's members? And they are looking to protect their members because they are highly skilled and need leverage.

Wrestlers can be found almost anywhere. If you unionize them then they'll just find scabs that will do it free from the union.

Actors can have the SAG because names sell movies and as bad as a lot of actors are, the select few that are fantastic have leverage. After that, it's just looking out for the next person.

Some wrestlers can sell on their names, and likely do. But, wrestling doesn't depend on them. Besides, the ones that can sell on their names will just use it to become SAG members by making movies. We've seen it happen.
