Need computer help- wireless router keeps losing connection

Whats up guys. Ever since i installed my linksys wireless router, the internet connection goes out at least once a day. If i unplug the router and plug it back in, the connection comes back on. Does anyone know how I dont have to keep doing this??
Also, while playing online on the ps3 the connection seems really slow downloading demos, and its real laggy while playing online.
    thanks

I'll just throw out some stuff.

This may be your internet connection or the router itself. Do you have any wired computers connected to the router when this happens? Do they go out too and only reconnect after the router is rebooted? Or is this isolated to just the wireless?

Some general wireless issues to look into...

How far away is the wireless ap/router from your computer? What is your signal strength when connected? When you go to connect to your wireless network, are there a large number of other wireless networks listed? Are there a lot of mirrors or metal surfaces between the ap and your computer? Are you using a 2.4 ghz wireless phone? Do you live in an apartment complex where your neighbors are literally on the other side of the wall? Have you upgraded the router firmware? Do you have your SSID set to broadcast or not?

Some simple suggestions - set the ssid to broadcast. Anyone seriously looking to hack your wireless connection can grab your ssid even if you aren't broadcasting it. Run WPA or WPA2 and broadcast the ssid and you'll be fine security wise. Also don't forget to change the ssid to something other than what it came as out of the box and change your password to get to the router settings.

Change the channel on which you broadcast in the ap/router settings. It's probably on 6. Try 1 or 11.

Upgrade to the latest firmware or look into 3rd party firmware like tomato firmware.

        Go Here

Search for your router model. Download the new firmware and read the directions on how to upgrade.

        Should fix your problem.

I downloaded the last firmware already. Didnt seem to help any. I have the linksys wrt160n vers 2 model. I downloaded the firmware from the linksys site, then ran the file from my linksys router webpage.

my computer is connected wired to the router, and my ps3 is the only wireless. when I look at my ps3 connections it says it has a 100% signal strength.

My wired computer also goes out, but like i said, when i unplugg the router and plug it back in, it connects again.

I just have a feeling it may be my towns cheap internet program they have.

Are you doing a lot of p2p sharing/streaming or lots of downloading when this happens? If you are, there could be an issue there with a fix.

If you aren't, then either your router is having problems or it's your ISP. I had an old d-link router that needed to be rebooted nearly every day like you describe in order to keep it working. Needed to be replaced. I've also seen ISP's have some crap service where they dropped a lot of connections.

If you have a separate cable modem or dsl modem, try unplugging the router and the modem from the wall (also if you have a cable modem, unplug the coax cable going to it). Let them sit powered off for a couple of minutes. Then plug in the router and let it do it's thing for about a minute. Then plug in the modem and see if that helps at all.

With both wired and wireless going out, if you have access to another router that would be worth trying. You may be at a point where calling your ISP and describing your problem would be worthwhile making sure to tell them both wired and wireless drops.

yeah- i am going to call my isp provider tomorrow. this is a brand new router, and the one i just bought before that, I couldnt even get to work, so I returned it.

My isp provider is actually through the electric company; and the modem is kinda funky looking. I had to install a small plated device(similar to a satellite dish) on my deck to pick up the towns wirless signal (the town has thirty 50' poles scattered around town to pick up). Then from the dish, I have this really thick cable that connects to a smaller cable, which goes to the modem.

Some modems don't play nice with certain routers.

Does your wired connection go out as well? Or just the wireless. If its both, may be the modem or ISP's network to your modem.

I used to have this problem and it seemed like it was more of a problem with my modem then the router. I haven't had an issue like that in a LOOOONG time though.

contacted my provider today, and it is their issue. They still arent up to 100% since the ice storm hit 3 weeks ago.
