    Password Key Wireless Router Question

    Long story short.

We have a WRTG54 Linksys wireless router. Linksys tech support did a remote with our computer to update firmware and change port forwarding for the xbox 360.

They gave us a simple easy password on the wired computer. Obviously, the wireless didn't work because of the new password. I contacted Linksys again to help the wireless desktop to work again.

We'd like to change the password back to our old password. I want to do it the right way so I don't mess anything up.

Is this what I need to do?

    Both computers are using XP.

I did try to get into the Linksys settings last night and the password in administration had 17 characters, while the password key they gave me only had 10. Why is that?

    1. Go to 19x.xxx.x.x and click on administration. Change password in administration. (wired computer)

    2. Go to wireless computer and click on control panel. Click on internet connections and right click on wireless internet connection. The connection should say low or no connectivity.

    3. Click on my name on the top, disable connection, allow windows to connect to wireless connection and put old password into the box and confirm password.

I'm pretty sure about step #1. I'm not so sure on steps 2 and 3.

If I follow step #1, I shouldn't lose any settings, correct?

    Thank you in advance.

Re: Password Key Wireless Router Question

I'm kinda confused....do you mean changing your password to log into the admin of the router? Or do you mean changing whatever password wireless users have to enter? I don't see why they'd have to change the information the laptops and whatnot use to upgrade firmware and change port forwarding...

Re: Password Key Wireless Router Question

I spent a total of 4 hrs on the phone with xbox and Linksys.

My son would be playing xbox live and within a few days of each other, the live would go off and knocked out the whole house. The message from live was the DNS Servers were interrupted.

Xbox couldn't get Live back on, so , they said I needed to contact our router company and give them 6 different ports.

      That's where it all began.

Yes, I mean changing the password of what wireless users use in our home.

I thought if I went into administration, I could change it through there, but I might be wrong on that note. Maybe that is why the admin password is 17 characters and the password key is 10 characters.

Now, I'm confused where to change the password for the wireless users here.

I'll look when I'm home (I have the same router), but isn't there a section for Wireless that has the various keys? It's been forever since I did this, and I just copied and pasted my 4 keys to notepad and printed them out...when someone wants to connect to my network he's entering that semi-nasty key...I rarely ever have to re-connect or re-enter that, so it's never been a big deal for me.

Yeah, the tech that changed the password to a very simple password, put the name and password key on our desktop in wordpad. I don't know where he got that from because I was fiddling with the xbox at the time.

          Thanks for looking into this.

          I hope it's something simple.

It should be, I just don't remember the admin of the router that well off the top of my head...If someone else here doesn't give it a look by tonight I'll log on to mine and check it out...

don't worry about that, it just adds those extra characters to "Hide" your password. if a 10 character password was entered and saved, it is still that password.

this wouldn't change the password needed for a wireless computer to connect to the wireless router, the admin password is only used to access the router interface so you can look at and/or change settings.

there should be a section at the top for wireless. not sure what firmware version you are using(or what I'm using, I have same Router as you) at the top there will be a list that goes, Setup, wireless, Security, Access restrictions......etc

click on wireless, then there will be a sub-menu underneath wireless. click on wireless security. down where it says Key 1, Key 2, etc.... change one of them to your old password that you want to use.

then do that, and it should be fine.

If you can't change the Key 1, 2, etc values, just write down the Key 1 value. Then go to your wireless computer, xbox, etc. and put that Key 1 value in as the password/network key for the wireless connection.
