    Problem With Internet Connection

Hey, I've had this setup in my house for a while now. But about 2 months ago my internet started going terribly slow. I fixed the problem by replacing my wireless router with an ethernet router. But then we don't get a wireless connection so the laptop in the house didn't work.

What happened? Nothing was changed in the setup. Did the wireless router just go bad? Do I have to purchase a new one?

[EDIT] So I unplugged one of the ethernet cables connected to my wireless router. Now my internet is slow but it's not unbearable. What the ****... This is still a problem because that cable goes to another PC in the house. I can't win this battle.

what do you mean by "you don't get a wireless connection" ? You mean the laptop can not pick up the wireless connection or do you mean the router can't do wireless??

Also, what brand / model number router is it?

My PC uses an ethernet cable to connect to the wireless router so I don't really use the wireless part of it. But we have a laptop that does use that wireless connection. Right now, the laptop works fine using the wireless connection but the PC's that are plugged into the router are running slow despite having no problems before this suddenly popped up.

I also have a router that is not wireless compatible. When I used this router instead of the wireless router, the internet was working lightning quick like it had before these problems popped up. But obviously, the laptop could not connect wirelessly because the router I was testing was not wireless compatible.

      It's a D-Link wireless router. Model number is DI-524. Here's a picture:

Here's the setup in my household.

The green lines are ethernet cables. The purple lines are the wireless connection. The red line is just the modem wire that connects to the router.

The "splitter" in that setup is this:

This whole setup worked fine up until about 2 months ago. Nothing was changed (on our end), it just stopped working properly for some reason.

do you have the latest firmware for the wireless router? Did you run the setup on the wireless when you first hooked everything up?

I'm not sure on either of these. But I just went to the D-Link website and apparently this type of router is discontinued.

But here's the replacement product. For 50 bucks...

            Super.

It must be some sort of overload or something. Everything works fine when I use a wired router. And now, when I take out one of the ethernet cables to the wireless router, the internet runs smoother (though not as fast as it did or does when I have the wired router in).

Though after a little more research, I found the firmware update. I'll see what it does. I have a feeling it won't do a damn thing considering it's from 2006 and I had no problems until about 2 months ago. Heck, I might have already downloaded it. We'll see, I guess.

your modem needs to be in "Bridged Mode" too. You have to go into the modem setup to change or check this, which means you need to run your modem directly to the pc you don't use to do this.

                I give up.

Nothing was changed. It just stopped working properly one day. Completely out of the blue. Any fixes I've come up make other connections in the house not work. I'm not good enough with all this stuff to mess with it. And chances are if I mess with it it'll screw something else up and then someone else is going to have to mess with it. So I'm going to have to just suck it up. ****ing sucks.

Maybe I'll try that whole wireless thing. Doubt it will be any better and will likely just be a waste of money...
