He's going for the RA the Rugged Man look.

Definitely some sort of stunt though, probably filming a reality show or something.

There were a couple of times when he came out of character to laugh. He's faking, imo.

          He was either:
          1. Faking and on some heavy drugs
          2. Not faking and on some heavy drugs

I buy the method actor possibility.

Joaquin was good at his job. I think it's safe to say that many thought he had next big thing potential, and has always been viewed as a top actor in terms of ability.

Perhaps, this whole "It's my last role" deal is also fake. He's just doing this to see how far he can go with it, and like others mentioned, he's got Casey Affleck filming the whole thing.

            It's either genius or insanity.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer
