Can an actor be in too many movies?

Every time I turn around it seems that Morgan Freeman is in another movie. In the earlier days it appeared to be Burgess Meredith. Kevin Bacon then took on that title for a while... in fact, so much, some guys came up with a game about it. DeNiro could possibly be categorized the same. Can actors be in too many movies either throughout their lives or over a relatively short span of time and still be considered effective and entertaining? Does it start to water down each of the other performances?

Eugene Levy and Sam Jackson will do any movie, no matter how awful.

Its possible, but, avoiding their lesser works seems to temper the 'watering down'.
Like DeNiro, Dont watch anything hes done since Ronin and your good.

It definitely exposes actors' weaknesses and takes away from the novelty of seeing them on screen. Seeing a Tom Hanks film is much more anticipated for me than seeing a Morgan Freeman film, even though I think they're both good actors, because Hanks isn't seen as often and picks higher quality films.

I think Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor because he chooses only roles he truly wants to do and devotes himself entirely to his art. He's only done 10 films in the past 20 years.

Well certainly you can be in too many movies in a stretch but you can't ever be in too many movies ever.

Look at Ben Stiller, the guy went through a stretch a couple years ago where he was in i'd have to say about 10 movies over a 3 year period. You tend to wear out your welcome when you do that but stars who've been around a long time can get away with being in a lot of movies as long as they change up their character a bit. I think that's what has turned people off on Deniro who I like a lot it's just that he's in way too many movies where he's essentially the same kind of guy he was 20 years ago.

If the actor is good, no becuz you would see the charactor instead of the actor...unfortunately there are not many good actors, seem like they play their self instead of the charactor...Maybe it's me but Will Smith does a good job...Denzel is overrated IMO

If by being in too many movies they're just picking any ****ty movies, then yeah they can get annoying but if they're in almost all good movies then I don't care how many movies they do. Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd(among others in their group) have been in like 50 movies the past two years but I've liked every movie they've been in so I'm glad that they do alot.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Remember when Chris Rock hosted the Academy Awards and said that Jude Law was in every movie he saw that year and that Law was a "low rent Tom Cruise"? While presenting an award that evening Sean Penn went to Law's defense.

Get the money while you can. In a few years, people will be wondering if you're out of work or dead.

Some of you guys are missing the point. It's not really about the money and/or what the actor would say about this question. Is it a matter of being identified in too many roles and having one role take away from what an actor has done in another movie. For example, I'm not feeling Morgan Freeman in the new Batman movies at all. I think that role would have been better served by a lesser known actor.

Exactly, I'm sure according to their bank accounts the answer is 'no'.

Samuel L. Jackson as a screaming tough black man would be much more convincing if he didn't play the same role in movies every 6 months.

I think it takes away from his characters and shows a lot of weaknesss in his acting abilities.
