A Dim picure, what does it mean???

Hey guys, I think my Sony LCD HDTV may be crapping out on me. Last night my picture looked normal but I get home tonight and it's very dim, almost like the brightness was cranked way down. I can still see the TV shows but OMG it almost hurts to watch. I went into my settings and raised the brightness but not much better.

I know that LCD TV's have a lamp in them and that they go out from time to time. Could this be my problem?? Maybe my lamp is in the process of dying, hence the dim picture?? Or could it be something else??

Well if it's rear projection LCD then you do have a lamp and they normally crap out on you after 5000 hours if you're lucky but when the bulb goes it won't start dimming it will just black out suddenly.

If you have the newer flat panel LCD's then it should last you a good 60000 hours (12 to 15 years) so this problem may be something else. Usually RP CRT TV's will start dimming after 25-30000 hours ande eventually die a slow and painful death.

If your LCD is Rear Projector, then your lamp is dying & you need a new-1. If it's an LCD Flat Panel I would do a search over @ www.avsforum.com

Thanks for the comments guys and yes it is a rear projection LCD.

This morning it would'nt even turn on and it had a red flashing light that I've never seen before. Upon closer look, it was an indicator saying there was a problem with my lamp. When I pulled the lamp out it was clearly burned out. Apparently it was on it's last leg yesterday and worked for a few hours until I went to be (just very dim).

Now my decision is whether to replace the lamp or to go ahead and get a new 1080p LCD that I've been pondering for a few weeks. Just wish things didn't look so damn sketchy at work because the decision would be an easy one for sure. I can replace the bulb for just a little over $100 (cheapest I've found on-line). A new set would of course be much more than that, but it would be new and a 1080p to boot. I found a 46" Samsung at BeachCamera.com on sale for $1149
