I just saw Speilberg's Empire of the Sun recently and I was blown away by 10 year old Christian Bales performance. It's not only that he carries the movie but just the subtle things that he does in the movie is mind boggling and he conveyed the acting chops of a 30 year old. Other performances like Hayley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense are great but that kind of movie specializes in scenes where a good child actor can steal the show with overly dramatic scenes. With Bales' performance there was not very many scene stealing moments and he simply carried the movie like no other kid actor I've seen. Can't believe he wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this role and suprised he didn't get any recognition or big roles afterwards until American Psycho almost 15 years later.
I haven't seen a better child performance than this one especially when he was in almost every scene. He was a kid acting like a kid, mature at times, immature in others, like a real kid. Most acclaimed performances you see with child actors are kids acting like adults like Osment and Dakota Fanning which isn't realistic. Thoughts?
