Problem connecting PS3 to my receiver

I have a pretty basic Sony receiver, about four years old. Anyway, I have the PS3 HDMI running straight to the TV and the red/white audio running to an input in the receiver.

However, the sound is extremely faint and quiet even when I max out the receiver volume. I have a Wii, cable box and even hooked up my Zune to the same input on the receiver and the volume is fine. I checked that the A/V cables are plugged all the way into the back of the PS3.

I'm at a loss right now, can't figure out why it won't work correctly. Any ideas?

What are your settings in the audio section of the PS3? You will need to disable the HDMI audio.

yeah, it is something in your audio settings on the ps3 that is causing this. Audio is probably set to HDMI and needs to be changed. You will only get 2.0 sound though.

Co-sign. If your receiver has a optical audio input it will be way way better than your current setup.

Me too...I didn't want to pony up the cash for a full HDMI switching receiver, so I just feed all the opticals into it and it works out great.

I just checked, no dice on the optical audio. Oh well, I'll upgrade receivers at some point down the line.
