Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
I'm just sitting here listening to old school rock like The Doors and Pink Floyd and the like and then bouncing forward to Guns and Roses, Poison, etc and wondering - is today's rock as important as yesterdays?

Re: Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
1) Define "important", and what makes a particular song or band more important than another one.
2) Does music have to be "important" to be enjoyed?
I've never been a fan of these 'is that era of music better than this one' debates, obviously. Telling me that such-and-such band is one of the most important bands in this history of music means nothing to me if I don't enjoy that band's music on its own, without its historical context, in the first place.
To answer to the topic: there are always a few bands from every era that stand the test of time, and I see no reason why today is any different from yesterday. -

The "elders" of everyone generation say the music of the prior generation is garbage, meaningless, noise, etc.
Only time will tell.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

Re: Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
Nope.
Twenty years from now, classic rock stations will still be playing stuff from the 60s, 70s and 80s with very few songs sprinkled in from our generation. Most of the songs from the last decade will be a distant memory a decade from now.
Today's rock is very forgetable. Sadly, bands like Nickelback will be "the band" that this generation has representing them.
Luckily, I think rhythm gaming is helping the kids in this generation find some truly great bands from way back when like Boston, The Who, etc.Originally posted by CardsFan27This is the 3rd time John Calipari has been to his first Final Four! What I'm Currently Listening ToComment

Re: Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
lot of important rock today, but nothing will ever be as important as the original pioneers of rock and roll.
the most important time was when Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison came along. Those guys were major factors obviously in starting the whole thing. Holly and those guys were huge influences for the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Creedence, Bruce, etc..etc.etc.
it would be tough to get more important than the originals. Just about everything we hear in rock music today has some sort of direct or indirect influence from those pioneers of the 50s and 60s.Last edited by ZB9; 02-08-2009, 09:48 AM.Comment

Re: Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
I agree in some ways; rock doesn't carry too much meaning right now. I just like listening to it. But I definitely notice more meaning in older rock.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
I agree with most posts in this thread: the genre is **** today. Why? Well most probably since today's Rock bands don't have any creative juices to record something "different." I mean, Nickleback's first and last CD sound pretty much exactly the same...
In the 50's, 60's, and 70's, bands such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zep put out music that the general public wasn't familiar with. That's what made them so great and that is why they are still being listened to today. Without them, there is no Rock music.
There are a few Rock bands that I like today though. They are: Kings of Leon, MGMT (they're unique!), and Jonas Brothers ()

Re: Is today's rock as important as yesterdays?
Today's rock is subdivided into so many genres and radio stations continue to play the same ten songs over and over again (regardless of format). Add to that the internet and the insane amounts of ways to discover smaller artists and it's REALLY hard for a bigtime band to break out. Sure, there will be popular bands that become well known, but it's not like in the past where everybody was into the same stuff.
We have far too many choices and avenues...for the better or for the worse.
I think for the better, personally. The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!Comment

I like both. I can identify more with today's rock, though. And I listen to all kinds of rock... emo, punk, hardcore, post-modern, "mainstream"... but I often find myself listening to and enjoying artists that my dad listens to... it's just what I was brought up on.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? Interesting. That's usually a complaint you hear about today's rock and roll from people who like yesterday's.
