    Help! Computer won't start up

Not sure what's wrong, but computer won't start up. It worked fine last night, turned it off and went to bed, got up this morning and nothing. Windows XP screen pops up but then screen goes black before log in. I even tried in safe mode and the same thing. I even tried to use the last known good configuration and nothing.

    Any ideas?

Typically this. Has it randomly shut off on its own in the last few days?

It's been running fine. Not sure what the deal is. It will get to the windows start up screen and just do nothing

Cant hurt to upgrade, thats extremely outdated, aka dinorsaur

If you can, I would take the power supply out and have a local shop check the voltage to see if thats the issue. I dont think you changed anything in Bios to change the boot sequence.

Its probably one of the 2 because before the windows screen, your video card and power supply aren't stressed because the power and video is running minimal. Once windows starts though, it bumps up the power and video card needs. You probably need to replace both, as the new video card would require more power most likely.

Yeah... I have tried everything and it stops at the windows start up screen and just stays there.

How much are we talking to get a video card and power supply? I don't need a top of the line video card, but something to get me through a little longer before I buy a new one.

100-200$ for vid card. If you don't play games, you can go with sub 100$.

                    PS, 40-100$.

If you don't play games or do stuff with graphics you can get by with a $50 video card

Maybe I should do that. Only games I play are text sims, like OOTP. If I went ahead and bought a new desktop, what should I look for? I use my pc to browse the net, hold pics and music and play text sims from time to time and that's it.

Pretty simple to install a power supply and video card?

Re: Help! Computer won't start up

Saw this thread the other day (I've had plenty of computer troubles in my time) and was glad this wasn't me. Well, now, it is.

This morning I went to turn my PC on and lo and behold, no dice. After a few load up screens it brings up a new screen that says that I've either had a power failure or my PC was turned off when it was updating. It then gives me choices to boot up windows normally, 3 different safe modes (regular, with networking, or command prompt), or restore last known good configuration. I've tried every option, but when Windows was loading it flashes to a blue screen (of death...) very quickly then restarts the PC. Repeat.

Don't know what it is. My PC is only two years old and it was pretty top of the line when I got it. I'm not too savvy with PC's, but my brother is and he's the one who got it for me. He bought all the pieces and shipped it to me and my neighbor (also computer savvy) set it all up for me. I've had no problems with it since I got it (summer of 2006) so this is pretty disappointing.

I don't know what to do now. I've tried rebooting it countless times but it's a no go. The only information I have is that my girlfriend unplugged my powerstrip yesterday that has all my PC plugs plugged into it. But she said she turned it off properly and all that good stuff before she did so (she did it the other day without doing it and I got pissed so I guess she learned haha).

                            Anybody got any ideas?

                              Sorry you're having trouble slick.

My faincee has a desktop she bought in '02 but no longer uses. Could I take the graphics card out of that one as well as the power supply and put it in my old computer to see if it starts up then?

Or can I put my hard drive into her old computer?

Didn't know if either of those options would work.
