Making Phone Calls from a Computer

I have quite a few friends that live anywhere from one hour away to Europe and Australia. Calling cards get quite expensive with how much we talk so I was looking towards using a computer program.

Ive heard of Skype, but not sure how expensive it is. I was just wondering if there is a program where I can dial landlines or mobile phones, but for free -- or at the very least, very cheap.

    Any ideas?

I use Skype, it depends. I use it for a radio show so I get their unlimited plan but I believe you can use it like a calling card, order minutes/$ not sure the price though. You do need a computer headset, but I've had nothing but luck with it, it tends to have some issues depending on connection but overall it's been good.
