Asteroid Just Came Within 45k Miles of Earth

Breaking News, Latest News and Current News from FOXNews.com. Breaking news and video. Latest Current News: U.S., World, Entertainment, Health, Business, Technology, Politics, Sports.

Just discovered on friday by some unknown skywatcher. Really instills faith in NASA (assuming they didn't know instead of knowing and choosing not to disclose). Though it wasn't particularly large This puppy was traveling at roughly 12 miles per second (force=mass x acceleration). Had it hit it would have caused the equivelent of a large nuclear bomb. Sleep tite guys.

I'm going to believe that NASA didn't want to tell us because they knew it wasn't going to be a threat/problem....

    ...hopefully.

45,000 miles is still a long way away, though I don't know how big the asteroid is in comparison either.

It's still scary... there's really no way to prepare for something like that.

In the world of space, 45 thousand miles is close as ****. It is close enough that it will pose a problem in the future as it will keep orbiting nearby earth's atmosphere.

1/8th of the way to the moon, not so far away.

Firstly, the moon isn't that far away. Secondly if you want to compare, 40 thousand miles is only fourteen thousand more than the circumference of the earth. 40 thousand miles away is considered very close when it comes to asteroids.

Why even really worry about something like this that we have no control over? As it stands now, I doubt we possess any technology that could destroy an asteroid with any reasonable amount of certainty. Of all things in my life that I'm going to worry about, an asteroid hitting earth is way down on the list, even considering the fact that one just came so close to hitting us. If something hits us, then it hits us...**** happens.

For some reason I was thinking km instead of miles. Result is the same, that's ridiculously close.
