Jimmy Chamberlin Bails On Smashing Pumpkins

NEW YORK – Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the Smashing Pumpkins.
Chamberlin's departure is posted on the Smashing Pumpkins' Web site. The announcement didn't say why the 44-year-old Chamberlin left the group.
Chamberlin joined the Grammy-winning alternative rock band in 1988 and played on all of their albums except 1998's "Adore." The band broke up in 2000 and reunited six years later with Chamberlin and frontman Billy Corgan on board.
The announcement says Corgan, who sings and plays guitar, will "continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins with plans to head into the studio this spring."

Was this the drummer that got into alot of hot water years back for being with someone who ended up dying due to an OD?

Yep, he left the band after that incident, but came back a few years later (probably after he proved he was clean).
They're not the same band without D'Arcy and James Iha.

If I remember right, their touring keyboardist died from a heroin OD, and he was kicked/left the band. As far as I was concerned, he was as much a part of the Pumpkins sound as anything else. Chamberlin's drumming style is pretty unique and really lent to their uniqueness.

Sad to hear, but then I wasn't aware they were really still together.

I thought they quit because "people's listening habits have changed". They posted some public whinefest about how the ipod has ruined albums and people only want singles or whatever. Wasn't that the end?

Yeah, the reunion was a shell of Smashing Pumpkins, now it's just Billy Corgan doing SM type music and using the name.

to my knowledge Iha is still with APC, but i thought i read they aren't really doing any albums only individual songs.

And this new Smashing Pumpkins deal is to just stroke Corgan's itch for success; lets face it Zwan sucked and his solo material? Meh. Not that i didn't like the new SP stuff, but without the original band it isn't the same.
