So I found someone on my wireless network
A few weeks ago my router was giving Excessive Session alerts but I couldnt see anything weird on my network. Yesterday I found a pc that wasnt mine on my network. It had its mac address in the pc name and sure enough the MAC address was in my allow list. Pretty crafty to get in, break WPA and get my router password. I am contimplating pressing charges, I am almost sure I know which neighbor is doing it. Anyone have this happen to them?Tags: None -
Re: So I found someone on my wireless network
I would turn logging on. Save the logs, draft a letter, send it to them, state that if they do not pay you X amount for renting your signal ($X times each 24-hour period), you will press charges for illegally gaining access to your network. If you know a lawyer, have them draft the letter as the company letterhead will scare them and might get them to pay you without going to court. -
Re: So I found someone on my wireless network
if they are "crafty" enough to packet capture and use airocrack or something to get past your wpa, they are probably crafty enough to spoof their MAC address, so that might not even be proof. Also, if you do have logging turned on, they might have cleared them as they logged off. If thats the case I'm not sure how you could prove anything.OKC ThunderComment

Yeah if they good enough to crack the password, they would be smart enough to not use their own mac address. This sort of thing happens a lot actually.Comment

If they keep doing it then I'd do something like, say what p_rushing suggested. (the lawyer thing)Comment

Re: So I found someone on my wireless network
Luckily as I left work there was a police officer in our lobby investigating an alarm that went off. She suggested I talk to my neighbor and then if he does it again file a report. Im thinking if I dont file a report and he was able to sniff out credit or bank info (which I doubt) I would be in a better position to defend fraud if I had a police report stating that someone was illegally on my network.Comment

But the pc name was two letters (his initials) and then the MAC address and the mac address matched the pcname.Comment
