    External soud card

Since my sound card died (and no matter what I tried, it doesn't work), I started looking for a new sound card. I found an external sound card, which is connected through USB slot. It looks like this:

Has anyone tried this thing? I've never heard of it, but since it costs here about $15, I thought it might be worth bying. I hope this thing can work and won't cause any trouble becuase of my old sound card, although my computer doesn't recognize it...

So, has anyone heard about it?
    Thanks!

That one looks pretty cheesy, but for $15 bucks it's probably worth a shot. I'm assuming you are just looking for very basic sound quality?

My sound card went out as well. I don't need anything expensive, just something to give me sound. I will probably go looking today, I might look into something like that.

Yeah, just something basic to have sound. You don't realize how important sound is until it's gone. Just a crappy sound card, don't need any quality. Anyway I connect the most basic speakers to it. I'll be looking for it on Sunday. What made me think it fits, was that on some sites where it's sold, it was said that it's good in addition to your internal sound card, or instead a sound card that no longer functions. Sounds good to me.
But I prefer buying it on the store itslef instead of oredering it on the net. I'm such an old-fashion guy...

Yeah, my sound card is attached to the mother-board so there's nothing I can do with it (tried just about everything). Although, I'm gonna buy a laptop soon, I still can't take this no-sound situation anymore...LOL! And I'll be able to connect this sound card to the laptop as well, so it's worth it. I just saw a similar one for $11! And I found 2 stores that have one of those in my city! Gonna call them on Sunday morning!!!

Opening the case isn't really all that daunting. Assuming you have an open slot (or if your current sound card isn't built into the motherboard and can be replaced) it's pretty much as simple as popping the new card right into the slot.

If you have an open PCI slot you can drop a sound card in quite easily and just supersede the one on the motherboard.

At the same time, I guess if you can find a better deal on a USB one than an internal one, go for it since you aren't looking for anything high-end. Generally, though, I say use external stuff for laptops and internal for desktops if you can.

EDIT: Just checked Newegg. The cheapest USB sound card is $15.99, while there are six PCI cards cheaper than that (cheapest is $7.99). I don't know if the extra work is worth $8 or not.

On the other hand, if you want to go slightly higher quality, it starts to make a difference whether you are going internal or external. You can get a good PCI (Sound Blaster Audigy) for $30. An external Sound Blaster is twice the price.
