Which show has/had a sharper decline? (Simpsons or Family Guy)

The current conversation in the Family Guy thread has me thinking, which show has seen a sharper decline? There was a period in the late 90s/early 2000s where The Simpsons was almost unwatchable and was totally flat as far as comedy is concerned. The show has bounced back somewhat in the last 2-3 years. It's nowhere near its Golden Age but some episodes have the irreverence that the old days used to have in spades.

Family Guy was always a show that had its faults right from the beginning IMO. I loved the show but I could see its failings as it lacked any real plot and relied heavily on pop culture which worked really well early on but we've seen society as a whole has dropped away from that kind of kitschy pop cultural kind of humor and now the show has to actually rely more on the characters which have always been little more then cardboard for the most part.

The strongest dynamic of the series being the Brian and Stewie relationship has frittered away to nothingness and Stewie's homicidal tendencies have dropped completely off the radar while the amusing slightly homosexual aspect has turned blatant gayness.

Peter has actually seen a lot of growth but in doing so the show has lost a lot of its punch IMO. This is kind of ironic as Homer Simpson went from being fairly nuanced to being a complete neanderthal during The Simpsons' Dark Period.

One last thing, you can clearly see how the lack of plot development has killed FG now what with all the crazy time consuming show tunes. The show tunes completely derail any momentum the episode has built up and ruins the rest of the episode.

Will Family Guy bounce back? I hope so because it was EXTREMELY funny back in the day. Somehow though, I don't see the show having a bounce back the way The Simpsons has had in recent years. Is FG's drop off worse then The Simpsons? probably not so I go with The Simpsons having the sharper decline.

The Simpsons officially "jumped the shark" when they killed Maude Flanders. It's been pretty unwatchable for me since then. Family Guy isn't as good as it was before it was cancelled, but most of the episodes are pretty entertaining.

I never really liked family guy like everyone else in college does, so for that reason alone it got my vote. I do catch alot of episodes because my roommate is obsessed with it, and I just feel like every episode is 50% funny 50% junk. Some times I find myself on the floor laughing and sometimes I want to gauge my eyes out.

The simpsons for me was classic and will always have a place with me because I grew up with a great block of- Simpsons, Simpsons, Seinfeld, Seinfeld, on tv. I slowly stopped watching the simpsons around the same time I stopped watching south park. I guess I kind of grew out of cartoon tv shows.

The Simpsons, for it's not even remotely entertaining for me anymore. The show got so bad it even made the old stuff less appealing, somehow. Family Guy is what it is at this point. The writers had some good ideas before the show's cancellation as they approached the show like any writer would, just with a different perspective (if that makes sense). The show pushed boundaries, much like The Simpsons once did, but even more so. Now the writers approach the show like a toy, "What can we actually get into a show that people will watch this week," kind of thing. The Conway Twitty and vaudeville guys are all great examples. MacFarlane and Co. put things into the show that is only funny to them, and they get a kick out of it while the rest of us are annoyed, and they like that. Each episode will have a couple of moments where genuine laughter follows but other than that the show is piece of garbage, and yet I'll still check out a new episode.

The Simpsons best is better than Family Guy's best.

The Simpsons decline took nearly 13 seasons, it only took 4 for Family Guy.

The Simpsons have actually been doing better ever since the HD switch, where as Family Guy as of late has relied on...A 4 minute long Conway Twitty music video, a musical theatrical number in every episode.

Thats what I went by. Family Guy took less time to go downhill.

              Family Guy.

For like 2 seasons it was the most awesomest show I ever saw. The 3rd season was cool, I missed a few episodes. No biggie. Then all of a sudden it was like, screw it...Deadliest Catch is on!

That South Park episode about Family Guy pretty much ruined Family Guy for me. Everything they said was true.

Same way I look at it. I loved Family Guy for the first 3 seasons, and they've had a couple good episodes since but they fell off in a hurry.

Simpsons was classic for a over a decade and still have some good ones every now and then as well. But it had to get a little stale after being on for so long.

Actually, I have rewatched both series from the start and the Simpsons from season 3-9/10 is insanely good for the most part. Family Guy gets good around season 3 and doesn't really fall off as hard to me as you guys have said. I can't stand almost any episode where Meg's voice isn't the girl from the 70s Show/Sarah marshall (Mila Kunis?).

The one show that's been consistently underrated and always funny is King of the Hill. I got reaquainted with it at 10pm on Cartoon Network and make sure to watch 2 episodes a night before bed...love it.

King of the Hill is great - I need to pick up those DVDs.

                          Love that show.

The Simpsons is my all-time favorite show, but I can honestly say that I straight up haven't enjoyed it the past few years.

Still no comparison to Family Guy though - every time I watch that garbage there's some sort of 6-minute dancing scene or pointless pop culture reference. The first few episodes of Family Guy were tolerable, but overall it's just a sad rip-off of The Simpsons.

As far as sharpest drop-off, I suppose Family Guy, since it was decent to start and just plunged into complete trashness very quickly. The Simpsons had a fairly sharp drop in 2005-2006 and that movie was just not very good. But still, it took 15 years to get there. Family Guy "FTL," as they say on the internet.

My complete loathing of Seth Macfarlane prejudices my opinion of Family Guy. I refuse to support anything he is involved in. Basically, he thinks anyone who believes in God is an idiot.
