Heh, wow... Top 5 ALIVE?? Chuck D, Rakim, KRS-One, Scarface, Slick Rick, Ice-T, Lord Finesse, Guru, Kool G Rap, etc. are still alive. Maybe Top 5 current MCs, but damn... especially Talib at #1... dude has made 1.5 good albums in his career (Reflection Eternal and Black Star, which I'm not even a big fan of aside from the last half) and

All of those dudes will be mostly forgotten in 15 years... Black Thought is the only one who really has much history.. the rest are from the last 10 years and had only 2-3 albums of material to even consider.

Not trying to knock your taste man, but I had to say something when you're making an "Top MCs Alive" list and nobody from the pre-1992 era is on it.

Here is all I need to tell you...

Public Enemy is still the GOAT...

Paul's Boutique is the greatest studio hip-hop album ever produced... Thank you Dust Brothers.

NWA, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G are requirements.

36 chambers is the only album you really need to own.

Nice drops stumble, especially with the Lootpack & Doobie Ashtray. Pacewon also used that same lootpack beat.

Asking this kid to listen to a lot of the stuff you guys posted is too much. He needs to be weened into good music. If he had to listen to Kanye in order to find out about Jay then all hope is lost.

oh wow....I guess I should change the name to top 5 relevant MCs then. Puh-leaze bruh...By ALIVE we're saying "current" right. I thought that was the point of what people were putting down as there were omissions of some great MCs.

But fine...I'll play your little game...

                  1. NAS
                  2. Rakim
                  3. LL
                  4. Raekwon
                  5. Guru

Never really got into Public Enemy, but respect their music. KRS-One is nice, but I wasn't a huge fan of his entire material (Rapture's Delight is dope though). Kool G Rap, Scarface, Ice T, and Kool G Rap I've heard a lot of, but I prefer Guru/Gangstarr/Jazzmatazz and Rakim over the guys you listed.

Top 5 lists are difficult to formulate unless you're specific on the formula - lyricism, career, success, etc. My list would be different on every one of those.

Lol @ changing your top 5 list completely because someone said there were no pre-1992 guys on there (I'm shocked noone from your original 5 made the "new cut"). Your list is your list. Music is all about preference. I already posted my top 5 earlier in here (Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Ghostface Killah).

My top 5/10 fluctuates a lot though. Jadakiss for example, fell after his last release.

                        Staying on topic....

I really like Asher Roth(on his mixtape), but I wouldn't make any comparisons to Eminem.

So far very, very disappointed with Asher's album. Seems really stupid. Weed, girls, beer...got it. I expected much more after his mixtape. At least there's always Lupe.

Edit: Just read through this thread. Made me want to delete all of the rap off of my harddrive. SMH That Monch song Stumble posted made it less of a waste of time.

Yeah, my top five dead or alive doesn't have to be the 5 empirically best rappers but rather the 5 that you enjoy the most or appeals to you in some way. You can disagree with the guy but he's not wrong for not including certain guys on his list.

My top 5, dead or alive in no order

-Eminem (a lot of his recent stuff makes me want to take him off but I just listen to some of his old mixtape stuff where he went hard and I reconsider. the rhyme patterns he uses sometimes just blow your mind)
-Notorious B.I.G. (love the effortless flow. probably doesn't deserve a spot in the top 5 on pure merit so I concede I'm jocking a little here)
-Jay-Z (too much quality for too long for me to leave off)
-Lupe Fiasco (Two great albums packed with songs easy to listen to while having pretty good content. Doesn't have the resume of some guys yet but he's legit in my book.)
-Pharoahe Monch (Crazy metaphors in his verses, great lyrically and flow-wise for me)
                          MLB: New York Yankees
                          NBA: New Jersey Nets
NFL: Detroit Lions / New York Giants
                          NCAA: UNC

You cant even really have a whos the best rapper alive/dead debate really. So many people like different styles of rap. I am 32. I am from Central/Northern Cali and my taste is way way different then alot of people, for me i like

                            Brotha Lynch Hung
                            C-Bo
Beastie Boys (seen them in concert a few times back in the 90's they were awesome)
                            Tupac
                            Mac Dre
                            E-40 (his older stuff)
                            NWA
                            Cypress Hill

Its just all totally different depending on where you live.
