    Question about web site hosting

I have heard from a friend who has his own website, as do I, that geocities is going to close all the websites it hosts some time this year. Not sure of the date.

Can anyone recommend a free web hosting?

Man, I've got about 40 pages on my site and will/may have to start all over again.

    thanks

Re: Question about web site hosting

    People still use geocities?

Wow... I thought that died out a long time ago. As far as free, I'm not too sure.. But there are PLENTY of cheap hosting alternatives that allow you much more control.

I had no idea Geocities was still around.

      I think Angelfire still lives.

You're better off getting a paid site with storage IMO.

Agreed with EG, you can find some pretty decent rates on paid hosting these days.

Geocities has pretty much been dead for awhile. I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find a free hosting service (and I guarantee it will probably be an upgrade for you), but I would recommend finding some paid hosting.

Yeah, I had yahoo and godaddy. Yahoo was IMO the simplest to use if you're a novice but there are some limitations on it.

I'm looking at about 40 pages of photos and text. Take a look at my current one.

Latest news coverage, email, free stock quotes, live scores and video are just the beginning. Discover more every day at Yahoo!

The pages are listed on the left border of the main page.

I'm probably looking at big bucks for someone to host something this size? I don't pay a dime right now.

Depends what "big bucks" is to you.

I doubt that site generates much traffic (I don't mean that as an insult - just in terms of bandwidth, you probably don't generate much), so I'm going to say you can use the cheapest hosting service available - at godaddy you could host for under $5 a month.

Yeah, it's just text and photos, so you could definitely use the cheapest level of hosting.

That's a decent option as well if it's available.

I've gotten 150,000 hits since March 2002, mostly old MPs, lol. $5 bucks is certainly doable.

Do you know of any websites handled by godaddy that I can look at? Thanks for your time.

Ah, also....is there a way to transfer the entire page(s) rather than having to do them over again?

I assume Geocities offers ftp access. You just need to login in, download everything as-is, then re-upload to its new home. You shouldn't have to modify or recreate anything.

Jim, hosting with Godaddy.com isn't too bad and that is who I'm using right now for my site. I pay about less than $10 a month, I have a load of images on my site considering the amount of reviews that I have. I'm not using their Deluxe option either. They give you a discount if you pay for 6 months or even a year in advance.

I didn't know that Geocities was still around.

Unfortunately I don't know any sites - I am working on my own, but so far I just have the database finished (well to the point where I need it for now), and I haven't really gotten the site designed yet, so I can't show it.

As for changing, all you really need to do is download all the pages and images and upload them to the godaddy server.

You might have to fix the links in the pages to direct to your new website, depending on how you designed it - but that's really all (for example, changing the links from www.geocities.com/page to www.mysite.com/page).
