Just Got a Laptop and I need some Advice

Today I got a Toshiba labtop from my family for my 21st birthday. I've yet to actually do anythign with the labtop, but since I want to take care of it better than my PC, I want to know what anti-virus, anti-malware, whatever is recommended for someone who can't pay for anything (like a typical college student ).

Anyways, the reason I ask this is because since January I've had a couple of strange instances with my computer, ranging from it failing to shut down on its own and eventually crapping out to my last adventure of the disappearing and losing a hard drive with some of my important school stuff on it. I just want to make sure that I can keep my labtop better protected than my PC. I already know I should get Ad-Aware up in that thing, any other recommendations? Thanks.

You mean my PC, this one has issues of its own and I'm still bitter over having to reformat this thing twice and losing some important stuff.

I have a labtop and a PC... or is it lab top? In any case, you can see that I'm not exactly well-versed in technology.

Just busting your balls.

Formatting sucks. Had to recently do it myself on my PC. Thankfully all my music was backed up on my iPod and porn (can I say that on OS???) on a USB drive.

He may have a real life and - gasp - a real woman.
If given the choice between having a real woman and a labtop - or just a laptop - I go with option A.
Sadly, I'm stuck with (expletive deleted) option B.

I'm going to attempt to be helpful here, I feel bad that this thread has completely derailed.

Good call on anti-spyware software. You also should get anti-virus software, I'd recommend AVG or Avast if you are looking for something free. Make sure your Windows Firewall is active (IMO, that's enough firewall protection), and make sure you are getting your Windows Updates regularly.

I assume you have Vista, I'm not really familiar with it (still running good old XP).

The labtop does indeed have Vista, which I'm also not familiar with. I think I'll go with the free AVG part, unless Avast does something better than AVG. Also, lol at some of the posts in this thread.

You need protection against spyware.
