    Firefly - Reboot/Continuation

Nathan Fillion and the cast of Firefly have been teasing a new project for the last couple of weeks, and today they announced that it is an animated series of Firefly. Reports indicate that it will be some kind of a continuation of the original series, not a time skip to account for the 20 year gap in the actor's ages.

They have showrunners, a script, an animation studio, the cast (obviously), but not "a home". So, they still need Hulu or someone to pick it up. So, all of this teasing could be for not, similar to the recently announced cancellation of the Buff the Vampire reboot/sequel. Also, Joss Whedon is not involved in the production but did give his blessing for this to go forward.

I've seen some fans unhappy that it's going to be animated, but I don't really see how you could do a live-action at this point. Nathan was 32 when Firefly first came out, Gina Torres I think 34, both are now in their mid 50's. The youngest of the cast, Summer Glau, was in her early 20's at the time. She turns 45 this year, and her character was supposed to be agile. Personally I would rather have an animation that allows them to continue the original story versus some kind of time skip where we see the crew having been on the run for 2 decades without seeing any of it.

I understand why Joss Whedon won't be involved, but his absence is more concerning to me than live-action vs. animation. Fortunately, unlike other reboots, the cast clearly have a passion for this franchise and so it should be a more seamless followup than other reboots we have seen where virtually no-one from the original was part of it.

Honestly kind of excited, I think we were all hoping for more than an animation - but It's better than nothing!
