No Country For Old Men (bluray) last night. Always a great experience watching this. The scene in the hotel is always a blast - so much tension and suspense WITHOUT the help of any score whatsoever is simply amazing.

Life of Brian (bluray) today. Hilarious. Not quite as good as Holy Grail, but still pretty damn funny and definitely quotable.

Just got back from seeing X-Men Origins: Wolverine I thought it was a pretty good flick. Little heavy on the CGI, but to be expected. The brunette was smokin.

Guns (low budget action flick with Elisha Cuthbert)
Are We Done Yet? on blu ray...Ice Cube kid family movie

I thought the movie had a really good concept but was sort of poorly executed.

Agreed. It was a long movie, yet nothing got resolved. There we so many loose ends...it's like they ran out of money.

Twilight. My gal just read all the books (in a little over a week) and bought the Blu Ray. I liked the movie although the main actress is pretty bad in it. The storyline seems interesting as I'm a fan of Tru Blood. Overall the movie was decent but my girl tells me the books are outstanding.

Has anyone watched Quarantine ? I know its a remake of REC , but it was intense. Watching it alone at night is recommended. Its worth the $1 redbox rental.

"dusts off the public domain/B movie portfolio"

Late last night I watched the 1945 B Crime/Thriller film Midnight Manhunt. Here's the IMDB non spoiler plot summary:

A gangster is shot in his hotel room and manages to make his way to a nearby wax museum, where he dies. A female reporter discovers the body and determines to break the case, but she must maneuver around a rival reporter--who happens to be her boyfriend--who also wants to break the case and the killer himself, who wants to find out where the body is
Sounds a bit interesting huh? Well it's a little more then that but it's also one of those programmers that was popular at the time which has characters who are smarter then the cops who basically solve the case. The movie is rather forgettable but what sets it apart is the rather interesting supporting cast who were all very familiar faces to movie audiences at the time.

Leo Gorcey (who's best known today for being a Dead End Kid/Bowery Boy) plays the wax museum's jack of all trades Clutch. This is the typical role for him as he mangles the english language and has a few funny parts. My favorite being the bit where he finally gets his cigar lighted but can barely smoke it so he puts the cigar in a wax figure's mouth! He basically pushes the story along as he's the one that alerts Pete Willis (the rival reporter) to the story and moves the body of the killed gangster.

The other familiar face to cinema goers in the supporting cast is George Zucco. (best known today for playing Prof. Moriarity in one of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone) Zucco plays the killer to somewhat chilling effect what with his slight accent and cold as ice demeanor. I honestly thought it was a waste of his talent to be in a B movie like this but in doing prep for this I read that he basically took every role offered to him even if it was a B movie.

The two leads are interesting, the female reporter is played by Ann Savage who is today best known for her vilainous turn in Detour. (1949) In this movie she plays a no nonsense reporter who's trying to get the scoop of a lifetime and the murder of an infamous gangster is exactly such a scoop. There are problems with this role as some scenes she's independent and feisty but her ex and rival Pete Willis woos her she more or less turns into a trembling ball of jelly. This is basically how most female protagonists were portrayed in these kind of movies back then especially in the lower budgeted films.

Which leads us to the main character of Pete Willis played by William Gargan. He's not too bad in this role but he's far too smarmy IMO. Nonetheless the Willis character uses his contacts and charm to find out the important facts and Gargan at times can be quite charming on the screen.

The movie is directed in a rather too straightforward and plodding style but the actors carry the rather by the numbers story and makes it worth watching. I give this movie a solid 2 stars.

EDIT: the whole movie is on youtube if you're interested

Rented Chocolate. Decent martial arts flick with a female protagonist.

Rented Madea Goes To Jail. Eh, more of the same.

You know I might just be the only black person in the country who doesn't like the Madea movies. Don't get me wrong I love my comedy, but the Madea stuff just doesn't do it for me.

I despised it and the trailer ruined it for me.

And I agree about the follow up statements regarding Push. All of us who watched it agreed that it left a huge door open for the sequel: "Pull: Just Not My Little Finger".

I just watched the first 30 minutes of Wanted.

It is perhaps the biggest pile of steaming bull crap I've ever seen. It wasn't even good in a "really bad it's good" kind of way; it was just bad.

It was a complete ripoff of both Fight Club and the Matrix; except the story sucked, the filming sucked, the action sucked, the acting sucked, and the characters sucked.

Everything about the first 30 minutes was crap. I'm the type of guy to watch bad movies all the way through, and 30 minutes was all I could make it.
