The Vicious Kind is one that I hadn't heard of that Netflix recommended me. I thought it was really good. It has a great cast and some hilarious dialogue. I definitely wouldn't call it a comedy though, as there are very dramatic and sometimes disturbing scenes.

This was the first time that I saw Adam Scott in a dramatic type of role, and he really did an awesome job. I was used to him in his Eastbound/Parks & Rec/Step Brothers mode.

Brittany Snow is crazy gorgeous too, which makes the movie even better.

I've seen a lot of movies the last few days. I'll keep impressions brief. Here we go:


Source Code

I thought this was going to feel a bit more like Deja Vu, The Butterfly Effect, uhhh Vantage Point... you know the drill. In the end it really came off as its own version of these kinds of movies and played it very well. The only problem with movies like this are you feel like they kind of cheat you by showing you the same events over and over (with different ripples of it). This one was a bit worse because you don't get a great feel of who belongs to what in the world as you're bound on the train for so long, as in there's no prelude to the sequences on the train unlike Deja Vu and The Butterfly Effect. Above all, the antagonist(s) in the film definitely became the weak point on a character basis alone, but in some ways if you watch it you may consider that to be the point. There were some awesome special effects shots with what they could do. I can't recommend this for everybody as it's not really a big thinking man's film either, but it does have an emotional side as well that I'm sure girls will appreciate.


Battle: Los Angeles

I'm a little crossed up on my overall feel for this movie, as I was never too dissatisfied but with that there wasn't anything super satisfying either. For any decent CGI and choice of shots, there was crap CGI with too much close shaky cam and zoom effects. The directing was like Paul Greengrass on a bad day, but honestly it was the only style I would have preferred for the story it told. For a battle of all of Los Angeles, it really only stuck to the company the main actors were in as opposed to getting a large scale effect out of the movie, probably something I think most people hoped for but didn't get. This movie kind of had a District 9 feel to it, which was good because it had the element of giving a lot of attention to your characters that you'll see in most of the movie. Most of what happened unfortunately played out unrealistically in the box score, but it was a flick for the popcorn muchers and people who don't want to see Michael Bay downplay these kinds of films for how they probably should be portrayed.


Insidious

I was mostly interested in this because of James Wan and Leigh Whannell (Saw). It takes a traditional and classical approach with regard to cinematography and scope, never phones in a Hollywood style scare sequence at you. Although slow at the beginning, it had a strong start and elemental purpose. Wan is very good at throwing traumatizing family events at his audience, but in my opinion his revelations about the real becoming surreal are what throw his movies in for a bit of a loop. In this case, it's another demonic horror story. For what it was, I'd say for what it was, Insidious was much better than most horror movies these days (Paranormal Activity would be the other exception). I would recommend it, but advise you to know what you're getting into.


The Adjustment Bureau

Great chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. This is definitely a different kind of film in that you enter a world such as ours with slight supernatural forces, and when they're presented on screen they become accepted almost instantly, something which I didn't really appreciate. As weird as it was and as destined as it turned out to be, it was certainly a surprisingly great couples kind of film. Limited in action and suspense, and a little jumpy in the fluidity, it held up and kept me intrigued.


Hanna

As of now, Joe Wright easily gets my vote for Best Director of 2011. This film was very tone-based and very consistent, yet at the same time very stagnant. In other words, don't expect it to pick up or drop off really at any time; it tells a story through motive and doesn't try too much for the novel approach of proper story arc, all the meanwhile develops its main character, Hanna, well enough for us to show real concern for her well-being. There are moments which reminded me a lot of Into the Wild and there is a lot of lighthearted subtle humor. The ending left a lot to be desired, but that stems from the nature of the story itself and I can't think of many other ways to cap it off anyway. But wow, Joe Wright... props to you man. Saoirse Ronan was terrific and beautiful (her eyes were a great selling point for most of the shots in this movie), and unfortunately I think Eric Bana was a bit underplayed for what his character could have been given. I recommend this film to any and all people.

I watched Animal Kingdom based on the above posting. I though it was weak except for the actress who portrayed the matriarch. 4/5? More like 2/5. Slowwwwww.

Your Highness was terrible and completely ridiculous but I laughed a lot. I couldn't see someone who wasn't already a McBride fan enjoying it though.

Karate Kid remake

Best movie of the year thus far for me. Has that indie film feel along with the sports film plot.

The kid was great. Paul Giamatti is always brilliant.

LIMITLESS--I really liked this movie. Interesting concept. Entertaining. Definitely worth seeing.

DUE DATE--I watched this on-demand the other night and I thought it was good, but not great. Lots of funny moments, but I still wanted a little more in the end.

Just watched unstoppable. Really enjoyed it. I didn't know it was based off a true story. I wonder how close it is to the real thing.

Just watched Lincoln Lawyer. Nice riveting film. Definitely keeps you looking forward to what's going to happen next.
