Insane documentary about the White family of West Virginia. If your not easily offended I would suggest watching. This family has zero regard for the law or anyone. If anything else it makes you feel better about yourself.Last edited by areobee401; 08-18-2011, 04:16 PM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Come with me to the world of B/W cinema!
"ahem"
Headline Shooter (1933)
This is a pretty interesting though antiquated film. I think the most interesting thing about it from the modern perspective is the actual newsreel footage of the Long Beach earthquake, a brewery fire, a race car crash, and a flood. The integration of the newsreel footage with the film is EXCELLENT. You almost can't tell that it's newsreel footage which is quite impressive for that period in film-making.
The story is fairly ho hum though charming in its way:
Roguish, cynical newsreel cameraman Bill Allen usually has a dame in one hand and a hip flask in the other, yet catches breaking stories and disasters of all sorts on film. When he meets newspaper columnist Jane Mallory, mutual attraction results; but she's too smart to fall for him (or is she?) unless he reforms (but does she really want him to?).
So as you can see Bill isn't all that fair of a guy. He'll do ANYTHING if it means he'll get a great newsreel out of it. He ends up meeting Jane Mallory (played by Frances Dee who i'm not familiar with) and they fast become enamored with each other. She's a newspaper reporter and knows the perils of the business and wants Bill to reform. Bill's friend Mike who is also in the business actually dies when they go shooting the brewery fire. You'd think that would make him think twice about the risks he takes and it does for a bit but then he's back on the job when there's a flood in Mississippi.
Anyways this is where Bill meets Jane's fiance as she's distanced herself from Bill and his reckless ways. The fiance Hal (played by Ralph Bellamy) is a good guy but he eventually losses her to Bill. This was an early version of the typecast roles that Ralph Bellamy got through most of his career as the kind hearted good guy who's the 3rd wheel and ends up losing the girl.
The movie has a pretty good climax what with Jane being kidnapped by gangsters and Bill/Hal working together to get her out.
I'd give this 2 stars. It's pretty average as a film but the newsreel stuff makes it at least worth a look.
Picture Snatcher (1933) Available on Amazon, Netflix*
This is a Cagney film that I didn't know about until now. So is it a worthy Cagney film? I say YES!
This is slightly different from Cagney's usual gangster film in that Danny Kean (Cagney's character) gets out of jail and wants to become a newspaper reporter! That being said he doesn't quite get the reporter gig but becomes a "picture snatcher" which was slang back then for a photographer who'd get the best shots to go with the headlines for the paper. Even though this is a bit off the beaten path in plot there's actually a lot of the gangster movie tropes in there with Cagney being chased down not by cops but other reporters! Why you ask? Well i'll explain a bit later when I give you some trivia.
There's also the love story aspect of the movie and surprisingly there's quite a bit of depiction of "loose women/hooker types" within the gang culture that Cagney exploits to find out the whereabouts of one of his former hoodlums toward the end of the film. As for the love aspect he falls for the daughter of the police officer who threw him in jail!
Anyways summary:
Ex-convict Danny Kean decides to become honest as a photographer for a paper. He falls in love with Patricia, the daughter of the policeman who arrested him. Mr Nolan, her father, doesn't like that relation at first, but McLean, Kean's boss, convinces him of Kean's good nature. But Kean uses his relation to Patricia to make a photo of an execution. Due to this, Nolan loses his stripes and Kean isn't allowed to see Patricia any longer. But when one of his former friends kills two policemen, Kean sees his chance....
The chance referenced in the summary is the chance to make good with Pat's father by getting his former hoodlum pal Jerry the Mug which in turn would grant Pat's father his captaincy back.
This movie is a hoot and a little bewildering to watch in some ways as it features the classic Cagney brutality to women who deserve it. McClean's wife is madly into Cagney and is pretty much a slut to put it nicely. Cagney has to push and shove and hit her away from him. It's not as bad as some other Cagney films but that kind of stuff would be met with howls of indignation from some groups.
This was a pretty snappy and fast little film and I give it 3 stars. I'm glad I caught this one.

I felt the same way about Captain America, which is really sad because Cap. is my favorite superhero. That movie was just awful, imo.Currently Playing:

I'm watching The Social Network for probably the 50th time.
And it's as awesome now as it was the first time. Love this movie. In my top 10 for sure. Maybe even top 5.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Its one of those nights where you on your comp and leave hbo on.
Predators 2010 - Didn't expect much and thought it was ok. There were parts of it that reminded me LOST. I think some of the score sounded the same. I was entertained but nothing special.
Tracy Morgan: Black and Blue - I saw this before and think it's still pretty funny. Sometimes he over does stuff he keeps repeating. It gets sometimes but overall he's a funny mother****er.
The Firm - I always liked all of young Tom Cruises movies. This one is no different. Fun thriller.Comment

Once I watched it without my friends sitting there saying "So ****ing stupid" and all their negative comments, I've liked it the 2nd and 3rd times I watched it.Comment
