Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

Okay, I admit i've been dragging my feet badly with the Godzilla movies mainly because by this point the writers had run out of things to do and in some ways this was no different as it seemed to be a quasi direct sequel to the previous film with Mechagodzilla being the main villain monster. That being said this was a pretty good sendoff to the first wave of Godzilla films as Ishiro Honda was brought back for this, his last Godzilla film. He eschewed a lot of the silly stuff and gave us a more adult and serious film.

The big draw to me was the theme of Humanity and how it plays out that the cyborg daughter of the mad scientist has more humanity than just about everyone else in the film. It's a bit of a well worn trope but it's interesting to see it handled in a Godzilla movie.

Anyways i'm taking a break from Godzilla til January where i'm sure Godzilla 1984 will re-invigorate me. As for this movie I give it a solid ** stars.

You can't find a better way to spend 90 minutes watching TV. Incredible. Due yourself a favor and watch this if you have HBO. Won't change the way you feel about, Mike. But you owe it to yourself to see it.

I know that superhero movies usually get a bad rap, but I love what Marvel's been doing over the past few years.

I'm watching the Avengers for about the 10th time, and I just can't get enough. Might get out on Saturday and check out the new Thor.

Up until Iron Man 3 and now Agents of SHIELD (which I realize isn't a movie, it's still part of the umbrella), I would have agreed with you. Those two were just awful, and they really soured me on the Marvel movieverse and makes me reluctant to pay to watch any more.

The new Thor is really awesome though, and this is coming from someone who hardly knew anything about the character or had seen the first movie.

Hot Saturday (1932)

An interesting and entertaining little pre-code flick starring Nancy Carroll, Cary Grant and Randolph Scott. (so it fits the purview of my Randolph Scott filmography survey) I admit this isn't quite my kinda movie but i've seen similar movies of its ilk before. Basically rumors and gossip bring down a young woman in her community as she sees the good in the caddish society playboy played by Grant. Randolph Scott is caught up in it as he's a childhood sweetheart of Carrol's who ends up getting proposed for marriage so she can expunge herself of all the crap that's going on but alas he ends up hearing the rumors and leaves her, only to try to mend things the next day but it's too late as Carroll has already spent the night with Grant thus fulfilling what were up to that point lies about her.

What makes this film interesting isn't the plot as i've seen this kind of movie plenty of times before. In fact, I wish Barbara Stanwyck starred in this as she played the offended and scorned woman excellently. (in fact, she was in a similar type of film a few years later) No, what makes this interesting is the dynamic of rising and falling stars in Hollywood and also the transition in acting style.

First of all, If you someway, somehow find this film you have to watch Cary Grant. The man is dynamic in this and shows a lot of energy. The classic perception of Grant is of the droll, measured man but here while he isn't spastic he shows more energy in his line reading and has a magnetism that draws people to him. Some of this is youthfulness but the magnetism and being able to have star power is something that's timeless and he had it from the very beginning. This all goes to the star power aspect and links in with the acting transition.

Nancy Carroll was a big star in the early days of talkies but by this point in time her star was waning and Grant's was fast on the rise. Some of it may have to do with her acting. By this point in time actors were starting slowly but surely to morph into a less theatrical style and more of a natural type of speaking style. Carroll was definitely stagy as hell and it breaks the illusion of her being a very wanted woman in a small town who leads guys on but ultimately is a "good girl". A lot of the actors here had a speaking style that was somewhere between theatrical and natural. A good example of this was Randolph Scott whose acting was rather up and down in this one. He had about 4 scenes really and in each one his style was quite different. Hell, the first time he's on screen he's speaking in a hick/southern style that completely threw me off! I think some of this must've been the influence of the director because the first Scott film that I reviewed he spoke in the style he normally did throughout his career.

Speaking of Scott, he really didn't have much to do here other than being "the other man" but it was nice to see him when he was young as my exposure to him is mostly confined to his '50s/'60s westerns. I guess this is as good a time as any to throw out the longstanding Hollywood rumor. I don't know when they met though this is probably as likely a moment but Cary Grant and Randolph Scott were great friends to the point that they shared a California beach house together. The big rumor is that they were closeted gay lovers. There's no real credible evidence that supports this rumor but i'm just throwing it out there for "did you know?" type trivia.

Anywho I give the movie ** stars. It's a bit overwrought and melodramatic but it's worth it to see Cary Grant rising up the ranks of movie stardom.

Watched only God Forgives last night. Outside of the excellent visuals and framings I did not like the story much at all.

The Mrs. had never seen this movie, so she suggested we watch it last night. This movie came out when I was a freshman in college, and yeah, I saw it more than once

Last night was the first time I had seen the movie in at least five years. I think that may have been the last time I'll watch the movie. It was a little painful to watch. I'd rather just remember the good times I had with my buddies watching this when I was 18 than actually re-watch the film again.

The Thundering Herd (1933)

A well cast western with lots of capable Western stars however the movie has a bit of a disconnect which derails it as the logical idea of having Randolph Scott take on the villain at the end is thrown to the wayside for a silly shootout with Indians. Great bits of characterization and acting is thrown away by the last 15 minutes with said disconnect which robs this flick of a recommendation.

I hadn't watched this film in years, but I liked it even more in my thirties than I did in my twenties. Lots of great performances throughout, but William Holden really stands out to me. The scene with him and Beatrice Straight is just so heartbreaking that it feels real. This was certainly an original kind of movie when it was released and it still holds up well today.

Pain and Gain

Very different from what I was expecting. Pretty unique movie. The story feels like something that Grand Theft Auto would deliver. I liked it.

I agree. In my opinion the visuals were A+ but the storyline was meh.
