Eh.... I always thought Spaceballs was one of Mel Brooks' weaker films. Not smart like Young Frankenstein. But, I can see why people like it.

Watched La Bamba again. Man, it's such a sad story. Truly the day the music died.

Lou Diamond Phillips actually did a real nice job for a debut. I always thought Esai Morales, who plays his brother, Bob, was somewhat over the top in this one and didn't think different after watching it again. But, not so much that it significantly affected the movie. Forgot that Brian Setzer, from The Stray Cats fame, was in this....always like them. And the guy who imitated Jackie Wilson did a highly respectable job.

30 Minutes or Less

I've had this on Blu-ray for quite some time now and hadn't yet watched it until last night. I loved it! Hilarious all throughout. Aziz Ansari was great in this movie. I had very low expectations of this going in thinking it was going to be just another one of those really "stupid" comedies but I was surprised. Very enjoyable.

I've had this on Blu-ray for quite some time now and hadn't yet watched it until last night. I loved it! Hilarious all throughout. Aziz Ansari was great in this movie. I had very low expectations of this going in thinking it was going to be just another one of those really "stupid" comedies but I was surprised. Very enjoyable.

I remember being pleasantly surprised with this one too, in a similar fashion to how I felt after 21 Jump Street. It was just a movie to throw on originally, turned out to be a good one.

Really turned me on to Jesse Eisenberg too. Not that I'm a movie critic but I like his acting style mostly.

I was pretty disappointed with 30 Minutes or Less but I had the opposite experience going in. I'd heard of it, was excited for it, and expected it to be really funny. Then it was thoroughly okay (IMO) and I felt really disappointed.

Frozen

This one obviously has a huge following, especially with adolescent girls. I don't know how many times I have heard "Let It Go" compared to that of actually even knowing anything about this movie. All limited previewing I saw made me think this was going to be about a snowman and a reindeer. I had little understanding of how much human interaction there would be. It's kind of like other people not seeing WALL-E and assuming it doesn't have any talking in it whatsoever.

Anyway, it was plenty delightful, but I really wasn't in love with it at any moment. I really wanted to be, too. The visual spectacles that can come about through sorcery, and the creative minds behind Disney letting the magical and fantastical run wild through both story and CGI combined screamed awesome potential. However, I have heard comparisons with Beauty and the Beast, for what reason I am not certain. It really does not hold a candle to it, and I'm not throwing nostalgia into this either (I don't even really love B&tB, now that I think about it).

Most of my issues with the film are regarding the story, but I don't know how much I can say without spoiling anything. In a nutshell, I think they had a story where they could play dangerously and they played really safely instead. Anything that was considered critical would either be resolved immediately or in a nonthreatening manner. In addition to that, it was hard to focus on whose story was to be most heavily idolized. The very fact that "Let It Go" is supposed to be an inspiring message to people was very contradictory with the story itself. Character's actions were questionable throughout, and although there is a prelude a lot of little things really weren't explained away from the start. It truly was strange.

Speaking of "Let It Go" (and don't get me wrong, I don't get annoyed by this song), this is considered to be the 'song to remember' in this film, yes? A Whole New World, I See the Light, Beauty & the Beast, etc. are examples of Disney songs which are pivotal moments midway through their films. Everything builds up to that moment before the third act needs to begin (not necessarily that late into it, but it certainly climaxes there). You aren't necessarily even looking for songs to be sung afterward, you need to be invested in the story. I think this is where this movie screwed up. I had no idea that "Let It Go" would take place about twenty minutes into this film! What was very sad about this was that the first twenty minutes of this film were actually pretty good, even through the song. Afterward, it was just kind of drab. Olaf became the redeeming factor throwing in some good comedy (Josh Gad was a good choice for the character). The songs themselves were hit-and-miss, but one thing I really felt about all of them was if they wanted to make Frozen a Broadway musical, they really fit right into that mold (mixed with that pop feel of course, but the way the characters interact with the songs makes perfect sense). I'm half-expecting that to happen sometime.

I was sitting around watching the film trying to pinpoint what made it so beautiful yet so ugly. It obviously is a visual dazzler, but I really think that it was held back by being computer animation instead of hand-drawn. The special features section showed some cartoon concept art, and I sat there and said: "That's exactly what it needs." A film that is covered in blankets of white snow need to show some complexity in it. This is where Pixar really pays heavy attention to detail: no scene is dull or without a certain visual fidelity. I think hand-drawing it would enforce them to provide that kind of detail. Think like when Mario or Sonic first went from 2D to 3D. It just doesn't carry the same attitude in the end. Consider these instead:





I'm immediately sold by these. Unfortunately, this princess story did not capture what Tangled was able to in the 3D world.

Again, this was just a film that I was getting bothered by because I was hearing the rave reviews and refraining from seeing it all the meanwhile, thinking it couldn't live up to the hype. It didn't, but I'm wondering what other people were hyped about. As I said, those first 20 minutes were pretty noteworthy and special. I was hoping they would lead up to something. But once "Let It Go" came on, I became skeptical as it jumped on so early. My worries were confirmed. It was very generic, all told... which is sad, because the story that was within should not have been generic at all. It wasn't emotionally riveting, either.

Perhaps if this gets adapted to a Broadway musical, the right little changes will show up more appropriately as it might fit better in that environment. Somewhere in here is a nice little gem, but the film that I saw had many big quirks that were just too notable to avoid mentioning. Plus, if we are to compare to other Disney films, not only does it not compare to Beauty & the Beast, but it doesn't even hold a candle to Tangled or Wreck-It Ralph before it. It's a movie where I could easily recommend it to some, but then not recommend it to others. At least I recognize its target audience, and clearly not everybody who loves the aforementioned films are not a part of this list too.

Blzr's analysis of Frozen articulated my thoughts on the film, and I had been unable to put my finger on what the film lacked.

For recent films of this ilk, I agree that Tangled is superior.

Disney was on a roll in the 90s with the Beauty and the Beast/Lion King/Aladdin trifecta.

The Haunting in Connecticut 2. Terrible movie that should have ended 40 min earlier. I normally like bad horror films but this was just stupid and dumb.
