Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

Just finishing watching Night at the Museum Smithsonian. I wasn't thrilled about watching it, enjoyed the first but didn't think it deserved a sequel. Well after watching it tonight, i must say it was an enjoyable movie.

The cast was bigger and of course more special effects. Hank Azaria was great as Kahmunrah.

I felt the same way. My wife really wanted to see it but I wasn't that excited about. We finally went a few weeks ago and I actually had a really good time. We just watched The Hangover on Saturday. That movie is freakin' hilarious.

Just finished watching the original Japanese version of Godzilla (1954) and I gotta say i'm most impressed with it. I'm not going to give my full impressions just yet as i'm going to watch the American cut in a few minutes and compare them.

Needless to say this movie was VERY interesting and well done for the most part.

OK just saw the American cut. Y'know, if I hadn't seen the original just 20-25 minutes earlier I would've thought this was a pretty good movie but man does it ever pale in comparison to the original Japanese cut of the film. It serves its purpose as a good popcorn drive-in flick for the USA of the 1950s but the original was far more serious and brooding.

The main flaws in the American cut as opposed to the original Japanese cut is that the main characters are shunted to the side while Raymond Burr is essentially telling the story from his point of view. The thought provoking aspect of Godzilla being a product of nuclear bombs etc etc and essentially being man's punishment for unleashing such weapons of mass destruction is virtually written out. It's understandable because the implication is that Godzilla is the product of the US dropping the Bomb on Japan and thus ushering the nuclear age.

The most egregious edit/modification to the American cut compared to the Japanese is how the hero of the film is handled, because he's involved in a love triangle with the female lead and it has to do with arranged marriage etc etc which was a concept very foreign to Americans at the time they kinda just shunted the guy off to the side and made him a "friend" of Raymond Burr. The thing is, his secret weapon is what eventually kills Godzilla but he doesn't want to unleash it because it can be used for evil purposes. The scene where he's persuaded to use it in the Japanese cut is powerful because he realizes the gravity of the situation and thus sacrifices his life's work but in the American cut he's basically challenged and forced to do it which made him look like a wimp.

Nonetheless both films were pretty good. I'd give the Original 1954 Japanese film an A and the American cut a C+.

Drag me to hell, very interesting movie. Finally a movie that doesn't try to scare you or frighten yous, but actual does. The atmosphere and mood throughout the movie was superb. I've waited so long for a decent horror flick and this one has it spot on.

            Movie wise: 8.1/10

Saw Kalifornia last night, thought it was pretty funny. Wasn't the best movie but I thought it was pretty good.

Also saw There Will be Blood last night, it was decent but not really my type of movie.

I watched Ghostbusters on blu ray last night - awesome stuff. Signourey Weaver is pure fire in that.

Watched the new Friday The 13th last night on Blu Ray. I saw it in the theater and still liked it a second go around. The first 15 min or so are outstanding.

I had to sit through Gods and Generals with my brother recently(it's one of his favorite movies...seriously...) and it's easily the most painful thing I've ever had to watch.

I could have read an A-Z encyclopedia in the time it took to finish this piece of crap. All of the characters had zero depth, there were painfully long and predictable speeches, and the movie seemed incredibly pompous which is hilarious considering I don't think it received a single good review. Not to mention it was just brutally boring. Even the battle scenes lacked any terror or desperation of war and would just put you to sleep.

The level of slant toward pro-confederacy in it was just sickening as well.

STAY AWAY from Gods and Generals.

So true. I couldn't make it past 20 mins.

Another loser to just come out is Powder Blue. Sure some of you guys would drool over some of the Beils scenes, but it's not really worth it even wasting your eyesight glossing it over at the movie store or your effort clicking your mouse to order it online. Steer clear.

P.S. Forrest Whitaker plays a...... (wait for it) ...... pained, despondent, sometimes angry man. Yikes....what a stretch.

Watched "Synedoche, NY" yesterday and was totally blown away. I plan to keep it on NetFlix over the weekend and try to watch it at least once more, probably twice just to absorb the whole thing. Left me with a melancholy feeling I haven't had in quite some time and I just kinda sat there for 30 minutes or so processing the film after it ended. The symbolism, the emotional honesty, and the epic scope of the movie is just amazing. It's a lot to absorb at first and I was getting my bearings throughout the movie, but it's well worth the time and emotional investment... best movie I've seen in years.

I usually like historical movies but yeah that one was dreadfully boring. If you want to see a better movie with a Civil War theme that is slanted a bit towards the Confederacy then watch Gettysburg (1983). It's a MUCH MUCH better movie.

Both of those movies go hand in hand, not either or, if that makes sense. G and G was good history but terrible entertainment. You have to really be into Civil War to enjoy G and G. What got me was how many scenes had someone with a long speech like it was some sort of musical.

Saw "Up" and "The Hangover" in the last week. Both were great. The Hangover is hilarious!!! Funniest movie I have seen in a while. And Up was just great. Pixar rocks and can do no wrong.

Just watched Grindhouse presents Planet Terror and Zack and Miri.

Grindhouse was pretty good action/horror flick

Z&M was decent. Nowhere near as good as Superbad
