Found it a bit predictable but I enjoyed Ant-Man. It's kinda nice in a way to have a simpler down to earth (literally) Marvel movie.

Stay for the mid and after credits scenes.

Ya...I always thought Marvel jumped into the other worlds rather quickly, but I guess they had to in order to conjure up instant bad guys. I guess it's tougher to explain earthly bad guys popping up as quickly, or more quickly than heroes and make it "believable" (ahem, XMen 3).

Saw "Spy". Was okay. Too many unnecessary, unfunny F-bombs. Once again a trailer ruining some funny moments. Nothing spectacular.

after two nights of falling asleep during it...i finally finished Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

AWFUL. Up there with Caddyshack 2, Blues Brothers 2000, and Slapshot 2 sequels. Although admittedly, as much as I liked HTTM1 it's not quite the classic those three were. I knew the sequel wasn't going to be that good, but didn't expect it to be so bad.

I immediately started up HTTM1 again to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

Just saw Get Hard last night with my girlfriend. Funny movie.

I plan on seeing Southpaw when it comes out, I love Jake Gyllenhall.

SOA fans may know Kurt Sutter wrote the screenplay.

The trailer irritates me, knowing what Gyllenhal's character created. Sutter's pen could make the body count high. This southpaw has a 20% chance of survival.

My fiancée and I caught an advanced screening of The Gallows tonight. I'm a sucker for horror movies and this was standard fare for the found footage genre. Strange ending.

Rented Kingsman. Really good movie. Entertaining and fun, never knew what crazy thing was gonna happen next. Was looking forward to checking it out for a while and wasn't disappointed.

Most of my favorite movies have tons of plot holes. Plus, many of the so-called "plot holes" in this film can probably be answered, even if the logic behind it is ridiculous (like BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN).

Yeah I'm able to overlook plot holes and enjoy films for what they are, but I thought they were worth mentioning. The Dark Knight is easily my favorite of the trilogy. They're all really great though.

IMO it certainly isn't better than the Dark Knight, but it is probably the most satisfying in the trilogy if that makes sense.

I watched "Run All Night" last night. Pretty good, typical Liam Neeson post Taken action film. It won't win any awards, but it's entertaining. I liked it.

Just finished watching "The Gunman" on my phone earlier tonight. Man Sean Penn got old. Still a great actor. Interesting story. Received bad reviews but I don't pay much attention to that. Javier Bardem was pretty good too. Some good action scenes.

Hardcore (1979)

A very interesting film written and directed by Paul Schrader starring George C. Scott as a strict Calvinist father who goes off in search of his daughter who's run away to California to do porn.

With that sketched out it's obvious that this kind of material could be mishandled badly but instead, it was quite the fascinating character piece seeing Scott's character Jake Van Dorn's cocoon-like vision of the world completely come apart at the seams as he goes to the most depraved places in order to find his little girl. Along the way though he learns a little something about himself as he ends up paying a hooker/porn actress with information on his daughter's whereabouts to work with him. The interaction between Jake and Niki (Season Hubley) is quite good with Jake telling her about his religious beliefs and her in turn, justifying what she does for a living. There's actually a pretty good scene where the two of them talk about sex meaning so little to them but how they show disdain for it in very different ways. These scenes where Jake is confronted by the harsh realities of the "real world" as it pertains to the decisions young girls end up making and the nature of the adult business.

The movie is also chock full of scenes where Jake goes into massage parlors, adult theatres, whore houses etc etc and Scott does a magnificent job portraying the distaste and sickness which Jake feels throughout. In a lot of ways the film has a bit of a Falling Down (1993) feel to it as the main character has to deal with the seedy underbelly of life. There's a seething rage just bubbling under the surface of Jake throughout the film that is unleashed in the end when he does find his daughter.

The flick is populated with actors who give good performances. Season Hubley is excellent as the street wise Niki. Peter Boyle is equally smarmy and yet empathetic to Jake's plight as the PI initially hired to find Jake's daughter. Character actor Leonard Gaines steals the show in every scene he's in as the slimy stereotypical porn mogul making flicks. There's a believability to him despite being so cliched.

The film is an intriguing snapshot at the adult industry in the late '70s. Schrader does a good job of presenting it as bluntly as he could without sliding into being judgmental. He portrays it all in a frank manner where one can make a decision about that kind of life. It isn't glamorized in any way but neither is it portrayed in such a way as someone outright against it would make it out to be. (It's noted though that Schrader said in press junkets that this film was meant to show just how seedy, sleazy and wrong that life is but again as I said he portrays it honestly)

I give this a strong 3 1/2 stars.


Also be on the lookout for Hal Williams (the dad on 227) in a bit part as a hulking black pornstar auditioning for a role. As soon as I saw him I couldn't help but laugh due to what I know him for.

When I first saw Rises I thought it was the best "comic book movie" ever. Upon further viewings I have to give that back to Dark Knight. All three of Nolan's Batman movies are incredible, don't get me wrong, but TDK, in my humble opinion, sets a standard almost impossible to surpass, though Winter Soldier comes close.

Speaking of witch, I saw Kingsman and Days of Future Past recently. Thoroughly enjoyed both. I hope Kingsman was financially successful because it kicks major ***.
