I just saw The Cobbler. Finally Adam Sandler was doing something with his life. I used to like his comedy, but as he gets older it just doesn't fit him anymore, or maybe he's been picking some terrible movies.

I used to think that he could take the serious route as he was getting older. Now I can see that it's vital in order to sustain a successful career. I Really liked the movie, he did a good job.

I hope that he makes smarter choices in the future and doesn't keep doing what's dragging his career down. I'm sure he can do better comedies, why he keeps picking those b-rated movies is beyond me.

I haven't enjoyed a comedy like I did with Trainwreck since The Other Guys came out, but to each their own I guess.

Definitely must be, because I don't much like The Other Guys either (actually let me correct that, the first half is pretty good but really starts to tail off). It wasn't my favorite blind buy is all.

But yeah, I'm not going to judge those who like it or anything, I was legitimately curious on what people liked in it that I didn't, which is why I asked. After all, I went to see it based on people's impressions in this thread. It's not even that I walked out disappointed; I just didn't find the film that good.

Prisoners: solid (yet formulaic) thriller until the end, which I really didn't like. The performances from Jackman and Gyllenhall were great, as expected.

Source Code: sort of like a blend of The Matrix and Edge of Tomorrow. Really enjoyed it.

The Cabin in the Woods: it's more of a dark comedy than a horror film (it only has the superficial trappings of one), which is exactly what I expected going in. I enjoyed it.

Fantastic 4. Not real good. Changed the origin story. Weak dialogue. Poor casting. And the Thing needed at least to have on boxers, if not briefs.

Give this back to Marvel studios.

Dr. Doom was handled all wrong. Just ridiculously powerful. He's making people explode, so why not do that to at least Johnny. And now he's gone....or so it seems.

I would go with Ant Man all the reviews for Vacation said it sucked.

I ended up at Ant Man. It was good once I accepted all the goofiness of teaming up with ants. The movie and cast made it all work but it was definitely the goofiest Marvel movie. Thanks for the recommendation.

I have not seen the original 1959 film, but the 1999 remake was serviceable to me. For me, it was the first horror film I saw in my lifetime (mind you I was eleven at the time) that had that very much rawness and claustrophobia. Certain images in that film would leave me mentally scarred, and ever since I always wanted to be provided with horror films that gave me these uneasy feelings. Sadly, it's only the middle of the film that's even any good, and the beginning and ending leave far too much to be desired.

So eight years later, they released a home video sequel that I didn't even know existed until tonight. From start to finish, it's only about 75 minutes long. No time is really wasted, but not all of the time was very valuable, either. In fact, when it ended I was hoping for a twist to kind of come into play, yet it never did. The premise brings in some continuity from the 1999 film and the plot development is essentially the same (trying to survive the night in the asylum), but the setting felt so different this time around. Like The Descent 2, the appearance made you more aware that you were watching a movie. This was also combined with the relentless background score. And although the opening credits was shot very well (as did most of the images spirits would burn inside their heads), too much of it was showy and just about picking apart victims one-by-one in gruesome deaths. I almost think they forgot what made the first one work when the house closed up, even though I will still remember some scenes pretty well.

In the end, it didn't really do anything to warrant a reason it was made, especially with how it ended attempting to resolve something that probably should have never been explained away, but that's okay. It was quick and to the point, so I don't really feel like my time was wasted. However, this is one film franchise where I think that a prequel would probably be the coolest thing to happen to it. I have yet to see a film that is solely based in an insane asylum. I'm sure there are plenty out there, and if anybody has any examples please point them out to me. This one has everything established for it already though, and it has a name attached to it that just might attract the right audiences. I'd fear how mainstream it could be shot (just like how the sequel was compared to its predecessor), but in the right hands that is a horror film that I would be absolutely pining to see.

EDIT: I read that the Blu-ray has a "choose your fate" feature like Final Destination 3 had on their DVD. That would be interesting to see.

Fantastic Four - Awful film. Even as someone that can usually find something enjoyable in ****ty movies, this one was just ****ty. I guess I didn't mind the F4 castings, as they all seemed to fit well for me, but their script was awful therefore they were all awful. I'll spoiler some stuff just in case to point out my main problems, but really no one should get mad if I spoiled anything, anyway.

The pacing was horrific. Did we really need to spend 60/90 minutes waiting for the powers to show up, to then only have about 20 minutes to do the whole Dr. Doom thing? Like really? Could've cut that first hour down into a thirty minute window and then, at least, we could've hand an hour with them learning control and Dr. Doom and all of that **** instead of having the "good" part of the movie be rushed.

On that, Dr. Doom was awful. First, Victor was portrayed poorly aside from the one scene where he's talking about Neil Armstrong and ****. Then, Doom was overpowered, and then he gets beat by a ****ing punch.

Infuriating movie and I can't believe I just typed that many words about it. Don't watch it. I don't care how much you like superhero movies. Not worth it.

Fantastic Four:

I feel like F4 was set up to fail. There's apparently a lot of stuff that went down behind the scenes (http://screenrant.com/fantastic-four...osh-trank-fox/) but to be honest, the internet as a collective was down on this movie from the beginning. It honestly pisses me off how so many "comic book fans" were basically praying this movie would fail.

That being said, every criticism is valid. The script sucked, the third act was weak and the movie overall felt very, very rushed. I enjoyed the sci-fi aspects of the first two acts, especially the "body horror" focus that Trank wanted to highlight with their transformation. Hell, I was even okay with

Its different, but I felt like it worked well. For the few minutes he was onscreen, Doom was a badass. I was skeptical about his look initially, but it didn't bother me at all while watching. Reed, Johnny and Ben were all done well for what they were given.

All in all, its not a great movie, but I don't think its as terrible as the internet has made it out to be. There is a clear divide in focus, as the first half-2/3 of the film is solid. I'd probably give it a C-. If you're a fan, I'd say go see it (maybe a cheaper matinee) and form your own opinion.

As for Marvel getting the rights back, I doubt it. Marvel doesn't even want them and their relationship with Fox is terrible. They've killed the F4 comics and all but removed them (and most X-Men) from merchandising. And I personally wouldn't want them to touch any of the villains. Doom and Galactus deserve better than the MCU treatment.

Go watch it, don't even read or watch a trailer on it, just go. SERIOUSLY! Went with the wife to watch it (her choice for this week) and I could not have been more impressed. It's a thriller with really good acting and unexpected twists, but nothing over the top. You leave the movie in anticipation of wanting to talk about it.

Black Friday (1940)

Pretty good mix of gangster film and sci-fi/horror elements in this Universal Pictures flick starring Boris Karloff and Stanley Ridges with a smaller role for Bela Lugosi as a gangster(!).

The little blurb on IMDB basically tells you the story:

Dr. Sovac (Karloff) transplants the brain of a gangster into his professor friend's body to save his life, but there is a side effect that causes a dangerous split personality.

Stanley Ridges absolutely steals the show as the meek professor George Kingsley and the violent gangster Red Cannon. The transformation is amazing considering they didn't use THAT much makeup and such to transform him. It's almost as if there were two different actors portraying the roles. That's how good Ridges was. Karloff takes his old friend Kingsley to recuperate but in fact, he's bringing out the mind of Cannon in order to get the money he's hidden. Unfortunately, Cannon has other plans and goes on a murdering spree killing the members of his gang who've turned against him.

Bella Lugosi is the main rival and i'm sorry to say but he's utterly unconvincing as a New York gangster but nonetheless it was fun to see him in something other than a straight horror film. This was a fun little flick (it's only an hour and 10 minutes) and it's well worth it to see Ridges' great performance.

Poltergeist (2015). The biggest disappointment is that Sam Rockwell took this role. He's better than this. The emotionality of the parents trying to find her was very weak. You appreciate the acting of the original, especially by JoBeth Williams. Rosemarie DeWitt can't hold a candle. And of course, the original medium played by Zelda Rubinstein won't be outdone.
