The Martian

Loved it. Thought it was great and kept up a pace throughout despite not being filled with much action pieces. Matt Damon carried this with his wit. Plot came across as almost a puzzle... this happened, so do this. That broke and completely sabotaged that plan, so do this. I loved the unique problem solving. I could only hope to be as intelligent and resourceful!

I was okay with some liberties taken because this was supposed to be the future and he was on Mars, which no person has done. So extreme realism was out the window from the get-go. A fellow viewer felt it got a bit too much at the end but I enjoyed it for what it was.

Underrated comedy kept it light throughout. I mean, he was stranded on Mars. (Spoiler? Feel like that is a given.) You got to have a sense of humor. It spoke the language without trying to be too cool. Some fun nerd out moments. Math!

Definitely check it out. Just came out on Redbox. Totally worth it.

Just saw the Reverent. It was pretty good. Had nothing to do with the book so that was pretty disappointing.

Apparently this wasn't Hollywood's first stab at translating the book to film. There was an earlier adaptation in 1971 called Men in the Wilderness with Richard Harris and John Huston.


So i've watched a lot of movies recently so i'll give short one line or two thoughts on them:

Red River (1948) Awesome John Wayne, Montgomery Clit, Walter Brennan flick that's basically Mutiny on the Bounty on horseback. Wonderfully told story that gets undermined at the very end by a very very bad reading of lines from an actor.

Station West (1948) Interesting little western that's not really a western as it's essentially Dick Powell doing a Dashiel Hammett style character. It's essentially film noir meets western. It's not too bad but once you get past the setting it becomes another detective type filck.

Copper Canyon (1950) Ray Milland and Hedy Lamarr in a western where he's an ex Confederate corporal brought into town to help get copper shipments going again as the southerners of the town are getting a raw deal by the Yankee citizens. Pretty good film and about what you'd expect from John Farrow in the director's chair. (Mia's father)

Yellow Sky (1948) Gregory Peck leads a band of robbers who nearly die as they head into a ghost town. They meet a young lady and her grandfather and find out that they have gold. Peck makes a deal for a 50/50 split but complications ensue when one of his men (Richard Widmark) wants to get ALL of it. Very fine film and one you should seek out if you like the western genre. The tacked on happy ending nearly ruined it for me. If I had turned it off on what should've been the ending i'd hold this in even higher regard.

Last but not least

Stagecoach (1939) Definitely in the top 5 westerns of all time. A lot of what goes on is definitely cliched these days but the acting, the technical achievement and it being the film that thrust John Wayne into the stratosphere is noteworthy alone. If you've never seen this then you should because it's one of the touchstones of the genre and film in general.

Hail, Caesar! - Not nearly as screwball as other comedies by the Coens, but certainly in the same league as the film brings levity to some heavy themes. The spectacle itself is rather amusing and charming as its coasts through classic Hollywood genres. As an aside these individual scenes are as gripping and interesting as the actual movie, but I've always been fascinated watching the working parts become whole. The "magic" of Hollywood is inherently managed and corralled by main character Eddie (Josh Brolin) as he navigates the kidnapping of an actor filming a religious epic during the coarse of a single day's work. Side characters drop in and out as typical Coens fair, but they all leave a lasting impression in which they serve the film one way or another - whether to reinforce central themes or to provide foils and contrast.

Its an easy recommendation for fans of the Coens, but also for anybody who is a fanatic of the classic, golden Hollywood of the 50s.

Watched Short Term 12 the other night on Netflix. Very good movie; on the rather emotional side given the story and the background of the characters.

I'm very quickly becoming a fan of Brie Larson.

Not really understanding why there were any nominations for this movie. It's okay, but nothing really stood out as a tremendous performance or story.

Just watched TRUE STORY last night.
it really was a decent movie, a lot better than I was expecting.

Also watched 11:14 over the weekend.
Have any of you guys seen this movie?
I actually really liked it. It shows the story of a girl getting hit by a van from 5 different angles or people.

The Godfather Epic - I had never seen the originals, but this was 1 & 2 put in chronological order with deleted scenes.

It was good, great in parts, but putting everything in order made it seem a bit jumpy and occasionally you just see people get whacked in a brief scene without totally understanding the dynamics of the situation. It's over 7 hours long so I had to watch it in parts.

I am sure back when it was made, the cinematography and shock value was second to none, but after seeing Boardwalk Empire, the Godfather movies would have served me better being a series where you could really dig into the relationships of the 5 families and why everything transpired the way it did.

Overall though, highly recommended, there are some really good performances in there with some really grand scenes.

I think you owe it to yourself to go back and watch the original releases of 1 and 2.

The movies were never about the other families competing/allying with each other, but about Michael's destiny to rise to power in his father's work and surpass him in countless (and some dubious) ways.

It was pretty clear the movies weren't meant to be shown this way. But yeah, while it is a story about the family and it's rise and specifically focused on the Don, it would have made for an excellent series with some background stories of the other factions.

I'll check out the original movies. It's definitely worth another watch down the road.

While the original movies were never meant to be done in chronological order it's not like it was some crazy idea cooked up by TV execs. The original network that premiered The Godfather I and II (NBC if memory serves) asked Coppola to edit down the language and such but Coppola also put the task to his film editor to edit it in a chronological order. So while it's not the original intent at least it wasn't some suit mandated monkeying around of the films.

Just watched Battleship Yamato, the live action movie from 2010. I grew up watching Star Blazers and I thought this film really did a good job bringing it to film. They more or less condensed the whole first season, Voyage to Iscandar, to s film and pulled it off with good acting and excellent cgi effects. Even the English dub was good. Wave motion gun still kicks arse.

After school I also used to watch Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, and Voltron....along with Looney Tunes. Fine times.
